FGR Women have begun the 2024/2025 season in fantastic form, winning all four of their opening games.
The league campaign began with a trip to Ilminster, in which an exciting opening half hour saw us score five goals that helped secure a comfortable victory against the newly promoted sided (1-5 win).
The following week presented a long away trip to newcomers Poole Town, which proved to be a frustrating test but goals from Irene Aguado and Tori Taylor ensured the three valuable points (1-2 win).
Next up was AEK Boco, hosted at The New Lawn as part of our first ever double header. Following our Men’s 2-2 draw against Wealdstone, fans were welcome to stay for free to support our women’s team as they made it three wins in three, rising to the top of the league.
Goals from Robbins, Hattie Jones, Taylor and Lowley secured a comfortable 4-1 victory in front of a joyous home crowd. A large number of local girls’ teams attended the free event, and players from our own U10s and U12s supported the match with flag waiving and ball retrieving.
Next up in the qualifying rounds of the FA Cup was a short trip to face Frampton Rangers, in which a youthful side was named, featuring six U18 starters. The team eased to a 6-1 win, having constructed a four-goal lead at the break. Attention for the team turns back to the league as they prepare to face Marine Academy Plymouth this Sunday at Hartpury.
Our newly-created development team have begun their league in similar form, winning all three of their opening matches. In our youth section, our girl’s ETC (Emerging Talent Centre) welcomed back its players following the summer trial period, in which over 400 players were assessed from the local areas. Training for our youth players began in August at Hartpury University.
Our U10s, U12s, U14s and U16s all attended football festivals in Swindon, which were a great experience for all. The festivals were attended by the likes of Swindon Town, Plymouth Argyle, Devon FA and South Wales.
We have continued to strengthen our female programme and are delighted to have welcomed a number of new staff to the department ahead of the 24/25 season; Steve Sarkodie (Women’s Goalkeeper Coach), Charles Bonetti (Women’s S&C coach), Chris Norman (Women’s Analyst), Kate Rehill-Meads (Women’s & Girls Sports Therapist), Rhys Anderson and Jasper Hudson (Media Interns), Carl Thomasson (Development Squad Coach), Carly Jacob (Pathway coach) & Eleanor Bush (Pathway coach). Senior women’s players Carys Lowley & Carys Minton have also begun coaching in the ETC as Pathway Coaches.
We are also delighted to extend our partnership with Sports Direct for the 2024/25 season, marking our fourth year with the global brand, as we continue to work towards developing and inspiring the next generation of professional women’s footballers.
Ger Wright, Managing Director of Sports at Frasers Group commented: "We are proud to once again partner with the brilliant Forest Green Rovers, reaffirming our commitment to championing women in sport”.
October promises to be a jam-packed and exciting month of football, which includes Tier 4 opponents Bridgwater travelling to Hartpury to face Joe Manns’ side in the next qualifying round of the FA Cup on Sunday 13th October.
