“We go into the game full of confidence,” Forest Green Rovers Manager Robbie Savage says ahead of Tuesday night’s game away at Morecambe.
Forest Green Rovers have made an impressive start to their National League campaign, currently sitting second in the table and picking up 14 points from their opening six games.
Manager Savage joined the club in the summer and believes opponents are currently adapting the way they play against his side.
“I believe Forest Green are currently playing under different rules. What I mean by that is, when other teams play against teams that are not expected to be up there, they might have a go at them.
“I think what we’re seeing so far is teams go into a low block and there is no space in behind. Teams don’t want to open up against us because if they go toe-to-toe, we’ll beat them so teams are being quite defensively minded.”
Rovers travel to Morecambe on Tuesday night, looking to maintain their unbeaten start in the league.
Before discussing the opposition as a team, he expressed his pleasure that the club are still in the league.
“First and foremost I’m absolutely delighted that Morecambe are playing football for their fans. For myself, when I was at Macclesfield, we knew we had to rebuild the club and it was very difficult for some fans.
“It’s brilliant to see them (Morecambe) playing football first and foremost. Results do matter of course, but the biggest thing for Morecambe right now is that they have a football club.”
On facing the Shrimps, Savage is expecting a difficult game in what will be only the fourth game of the season for the home side.
“We’re expecting a tough game from a side that has been put together very quickly. There will be a huge atmosphere and we’ll go into the game full of confidence.
“But once again for us, embrace it. What an opportunity for our players to go and showcase how good they are in front of over 3,000 fans. I hope it’s like a game of basketball! Both teams have a go at each other that’s what I want to see.”
Savage appreciates the importance of bringing an exciting brand of football to the club in order for fans to enjoy coming to games.
“I respect the opposition but I don’t really care how they play. I know for a fact that if we are at our best, nobody can beat us. That’s what I honestly believe and that’s the mentality this group have.
“We’re unbeaten in seven games in all competitions and the belief they have is off the scale at the minute, people are showing us massive amounts of respect. We’ve gone through August unbeaten and have the best xG difference in the top five leagues.
“This way of playing will continue as it excites and engages the fans who have been terrific. When I’m on the side with my staff, I want to be entertained and watch attack-minded football and that’s what we’re getting so far.”
