This season, we’re asking the fans of visiting clubs to give their thoughts ahead of each game at The Fully Charged New Lawn.
We spoke to Colchester fan Max Harrington from the Views On The U’s podcast to find out more about Hayden Mullins’ Colchester United.
I was born and raised in Colchester, I’ve been following the U’s since as long as I can remember.
My first game was as a 6 year old at the Old Wembley, against Torquay in the third division playoff final which we won 1-0. Since then I was hooked.
It’s been a rollercoaster ride, battling relegation out of the Football League to finishing in the top half of the Championship. You never quite know what you’re going to get following the boys in blue and white.
We currently sit 22nd in the league, the only way to sum up the season so far is extremely poor. We battled relegation for almost all of last season and most fans expected us to kick on this season.
We signed some fairly big names in the summer, combined with some of the very talented young players we have and there was a lot of optimism at the start of the season.
We’ve struggled to score goals and our away record is atrocious, unfortunately it’s looking like another year of looking over our shoulder.
I’d say Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu is our star man, he’s recently been linked with a move to Nottingham Forest.
We’re hoping we can hold onto him a bit longer but I think it’s fair to say he is way too good for us.
He plays centre midfield, he can do a bit of everything. He has good vision, a great engine and is defensively brilliant too.
Ben Stevenson was a good player for us, he played a lot of games during those years which I think says a lot. He was always composed on the ball and he was a bit like a quarterback for us in the midfield.
He scored a couple of good goals and what impressed me the most was how much he improved his defensive game.
We were disappointed to see him go but it’s good to see he is doing well at FGR.
He took over towards the end of the last season and we looked pretty good. However, I personally think that was due to the helping hand of Paul Tisdale who came in alongside Mullins to help out.
So far this season we’ve won 5 out of 21 and scored 17 goals, it’s not been pretty to watch. His team selection at times is questionable and often plays players out of position.
Managers are usually given time at the U’s but there are a few calling for his head already, I have to admit I’m one that is in that camp.
I think we’ll finish between 17th-21st, I don’t think we’ll get relegated (famous last words).
Defensively we’re pretty solid, Freddie Sears has been amongst the goals so far which I think will be enough to keep us up.
Fingers crossed we can have a great second half of the season and fly up the table.
