The Opposition: Wycombe Wanderers (H)

A look at Saturday's opponents

November 10th 2022James Williams

Rovers are back in League One action at The Bolt New Lawn for the first time in three weeks this Saturday as we host Wycombe Wanderers.

Head Coach Ian Burchnall and his side will be hoping to back up last weekend's 2-0 away win over South Shields in the FA Cup first round.

Here, we take a look at Gareth Ainsworth's side ahead of the first meeting between the two clubs in over four years.

Gareth Ainsworth WWFC Manager

IN THE DUGOUT: GARETH AINSWORTH

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth took over at Adams Park way back in September 2012 and is currently the second longest serving boss in the EFL.

The 49-year-old enjoyed an extensive playing career in England making over 500 appearances for the likes of Preston North End, QPR and Wycombe.

Ainsworth played for the Chairboys over two spells after his loan move was made permanent before he retired from playing and focused solely on management.

He helped the club remain in League Two in the 2013/14 season before two promotions in three years saw the Chairboys playing Championship football in 2020.

The club narrowly missed out on an immediate return to the second tier under Ainsworth last season as they lost to Sunderland in the League One play-off final.

ONE TO WATCH: ANIS MEHMETI

Wycombe ace Anis Mehmeti arrived in Buckinghamshire back in 2020 joining from non-League side Woodford Town.

The Albanian youth international played his academy football with Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur as well as Norwich City, where we moved to in 2017.

Mehmeti would leave the Canaries to head to Woodford but wouldn't stay long, as he signed for the Chairboys ahead of the 2020/21 season.

The 21-year-old made his debut against Millwall back in October 2020 and has gone on to play 87 times, as he heads toward 100 appearances for the club.

Mehmeti has had an eye-catching start to the season having scored seven league goals already this term - 30% of the side's total goals scored.

Paragraph Break

LAST TIME OUT

Wycombe surrendered a lead on two occasions at home to Port Vale as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Darrell Clarke's side.

The Chairboys had the lead inside the opening four minutes as Anis Mehmeti's long range strike was too powerful for Vale keeper Jack Stevens.

But the scores would be level at the break as James Wilson volleyed home in the equaliser deep into first half stoppage time.

Another impressive long range effort put hosts back ahead on the hour mark as Lewis Wing set his sights before volleying into the left bottom corner.

Port Vale skipper Tom Conlon would ensure both sides would go home with a point 13 minutes from time however when he headed home from Mal Benning's corner.

FGR vs Wycombe 2018/19

LAST TIME WE MET

Rovers were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at Adams Park losing on penalties to Wycombe in the second round back in August 2018.

It took until the 55th minute for the deadlock to be broken when Scott Kashket finished past James Montgomery to put the hosts ahead.

That lead lasted all of two minutes however as Dayle Grubb latched onto Paul Digby's through ball before rolling his effort through the legs of Ryan Allsop.

The hosts went back ahead through Anthony Stewart but four minutes from time Carl Winchester poked Joseph Mills' free kick home to take the game to penalties.

After both sides missed a penalty each, Digby had to score to keep the tie going - but his effort was saved and the Chairboys progressed.
