The Opposition: Shrewsbury Town

September 1st 2022James Williams

Rovers are back in league action this weekend as we welcome Shrewsbury Town to The Bolt New Lawn on Saturday afternoon.

After a comfortable 3-1 win in the Papa John’s Trophy over Southampton U21’s on Tuesday Ian Burchnall’s side now return to League One football.

Here’s some key information on the Shrews ahead of their visit to Gloucestershire.

IN THE DUGOUT: STEVE COTTERILL

Steve-Cotterill-Shrewsbury

A coaching veteran of the EFL, Steve Cotterill became the new Shrewsbury manager back in November 2020 after over two years away from management.

After a 10 year playing career with the likes of Cheltenham Town, Wimbledon and AFC Bournemouth Cotterill took his first coaching job with Sligo Rovers in Ireland.

Next for Cotterill was a return to his hometown club Cheltenham where he won three promotions before moving onto roles with Stoke City, Sunderland Leicester City and Burnley.

After three years out of a job Cotterill went to Notts County for a brief spell in 2010 helping them win the League Two title.

Portsmouth and Nottingham Forest were the 58-year-old's next clubs before he had more success during a three year spell with Bristol City, winning both the EFL Trophy and League One title.

A short spell with Birmingham City followed before he arrived in Shropshire nearly two years ago where he has steered the side to two solid finishes in the league.

ONE TO WATCH: LUKE LEAHY

Luke-Leahy-Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury captain Luke Leahy joined the club back in May last year following the end of his contract with Bristol Rovers.

Born in Coventry, Leahy began his career with Rugby Town before a move across the border to Scotland as he signed for Falkirk.

During his five year spell with the club the versatile 29-year-old made well over 100 appearances for the Bairns helping them to a number of top half finishes in the Scottish Championship.

He came back to England in 2017 joining Walsall where he spent two seasons before he was released and joined the Gas.

Leahy was also the captain at Rovers during the end of his time in Bristol before the side were relegated and Leahy made the move to Salop.

He had an impressive campaign last year netting eight times and grabbing seven assists in his 42 League One starts.

PLAYED FOR BOTH SIDES

David-Davis-Shrewsbury

FGR’s midfield powerhouse David Davis joined Rovers earlier this Summer from this weekend’s opponents Shrewsbury Town.

The 31 year old first joined Salop in January 2021 and went on to make an impressive 74 appearances for the club despite a lengthy spell out with injury last season.

'Digga' has brought real experience and energy to GL6 since his arrival and has been involved in all eight of Rovers games in all competitions so far this season.

LAST TIME OUT

Shrewsbury came from a goal down to rescue a point late on in a 1-1 draw against Bristol Rovers at The Memorial Stadium.

The Gas had the best chance of the first half on 26 minutes when a cross from Antony Evans met the head of Harry Anderson who could only direct his effort off the post.

Steve Cotterill’s away side were almost gifted a goal not long after as defender Alfie Kilgour‘s dangerous back pass nearly crept in had it have not been for James Belshaw’s last ditch intervention.

The opener finally came on 68 minutes when Rovers substitute Ryan Loft received the ball in the box before coolly finishing past Marko Marosi.

But 10 minutes from time the visitors had their equaliser as another substitute this time Ryan Bowman poked home from close range to take a point back to Shropshire.
