The Opposition: Sheffield Wednesday (H)

A look at Sunday's opponents

March 23rd 2023FGR Media

We take on League One promotion hopefuls Sheffield Wednesday this weekend, with the game being televised live on Sky Sports.

It's been an impressive campaign from The Owls, who look well-placed to secure promotion back to the Championship at the second time of asking. Here is everything you need to know about Sunday's opponents.

IN THE DUGOUT: DARREN MOORE

In his second full year in charge of The Owls, Moore has got Wednesday on the cusp of promotion back to the Championship.

Darren Moore

He took over at Hillsborough in March 2021, with Wednesday seven points off safety in the Championship. They ended up getting relegated to League One that season, with Moore's remit to bring the feel-good factor back to Wednesday and to take the club back to the second tier.

Last season, Moore's side accumulated 85 points, but that was only enough for a fourth-placed finish in a very competitive League One campaign. They fell to defeat in the play-off semi-finals to Sunderland, but it looks like Wednesday could get it right at the second time of asking. They have lost just four times all season, conceding 27 goals.

ONE TO WATCH: AKIN FAMEWO

Eyes will immediately be drawn to Barry Bannan in the Wednesday midfield, who has had yet another outstanding campaign with the Yorkshire club.

However, centre-back Famewo has become a fans favourite at Hillsborough since coming into the side regularly in January. The 24-year-old was signed from Norwich City in the summer for an undisclosed fee, but he suffered a serious injury against MK Dons on his debut.

Akin Famewo

Since Mark McGuinness was recalled by Cardiff City in January, Famewo has come back into the side - and before the midweek defeat to Barnsley, Wednesday had conceded just three goals in his eight starts since he was reintroduced to the side.

Famewo is a versatile defender, but usually plays on the left of Wednesday's back three, lining-up alongside the experienced duo of Aden Flint and Dominic Iorfa.

LAST TIME OUT

Wednesday tasted their first league defeat in 23 games in midweek, when they were beaten 4-2 by Michael Duff's Barnsley at Oakwell.

In what was a pulsating Yorkshire derby, Darren Moore's went two goals down after 12 minutes, with Devante Cole and James Norwood giving the Tykes an early advantage.

Wednesday fought back through Lee Gregory, who then scored his second of the game in the 74th minute to bring the visitors level - meeting Marvin Johnson's teasing cross.

Barnsley regained the lead nine minutes later through Max Watters, before ex-Forest Green defender Liam Kitching secured the three points for Barnsley, ending Wednesday's long unbeaten run.
