The Opposition: Plymouth Argyle

August 18th 2022James Williams

Rovers return to The Bolt New Lawn this Saturday afternoon and play host to Plymouth Argyle in League One action.

Ian Burchnall and his side head into this one having not played in a week following Tuesday’s postponed home clash against Accrington Stanley.

Here’s the lowdown on the travelling Greens ahead of their trip up to GL6 from Devon.

IN THE DUGOUT: STEVEN SCHUMACHER

Steven-Schumacher-Plymouth

Plymouth boss Steven Schumacher took the managers job in December 2021, stepping up from the assistant managers role following the departure of Ryan Lowe.

As a player, Schumacher came through the Everton youth academy winning the 2002 FA Youth Cup before three year spells with Bradford City and Crewe Alexandra.

Bury was the Liverpool born midfielders next destination where he became club captain and spent a further three years before another move this time to Fleetwood Town.

Spells with the Cod Army, Stevenage and Southport rounded off the 38 year olds career before he turned to coaching.

Schumacher would return to Bury as a first team coach under former teammate Lowe before following him to Plymouth in 2019.

After taking the lead role midway through last season, his side narrowly missed out on the play-offs missing out on the final day.

ONE TO WATCH: FINN AZAZ

Finn-Azaz-Plymouth

Attacking midfielder Finn Azaz joined Plymouth on-loan from Aston Villa at the start of the season for a first experience of League One football.

The 21-year-old spent a total of 12 years coming through West Bromwich Albion’s academy but made his senior debut for Cheltenham Town, where he spent the 2020/21 season on loan.

Azaz’s 12 year stay with the Baggies would end without him making a first team appearance for the club, as he moved to city rivals Villa at the end of the season.

He would immediately head out on loan this time to Newport County where he spent last season accumulating 15 goal involvements, winning the League Two Young Player of the Year award.

Azaz has had a fine start to this season too during his time in Devon having scored twice already for his new side, including a winner on the opening day against Barnsley.

The striker scored seven goals in 14 games for the Greens helping them to the League Two play-off final, in which they were defeated by AFC Wimbledon.

Jamma has been an integral part in Rovers’ recent success having scored 37 goals in 91 games during him time in Nailsworth.

LAST TIME OUT

Plymouth came home from South London empty handed on Tuesday night, losing 5-1 to Charlton Athletic at The Valley.

New Addicks winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi opened the scoring early on before a James Wilson handball in the box five minutes before the break saw Wilson see red.

Jayden Stockley converted the penalty before Sean Clare made it three in first half added time to really take the game away from Argyle.

Morgan Whittaker pulled back a consolation for the visitors but goals late on from Charlie Kirk and Miles Leaburn made sure the three points went to Charlton.

The result left Plymouth mid table after two wins and two losses from their opening four games whilst Charlton sit just outside the play-off places.
