Match Preview - Crewe (A)

All you need to know about Monday's opponents

March 31st 2024Sam Yapp

It’s a quick turnaround for Rovers following Saturday’s defeat as we visit the Mornflake Stadium for our League Two clash against Crewe Alexandra on Easter Monday.

Rovers will be looking to get the better of Crewe this time around as they ran out 4-1 winners during the reverse fixture back in September.

Ahead of trip to Cheshire here is everything Rovers fans need to know about our opponents.

IN THE DUGOUT - LEE BELL

Bell is enjoying his first full season as a manager having been promoted from assistant manager back in December 2022 following the clubs re-shuffle after their relegation from League One.

The 41-year-old could be dubbed as ‘Mr Crewe’ himself having spent the majority of his playing career with the club and began his managerial career within the clubs youth set-ups.

After leading his side to a 13th place finish last season, Bell has taken Crewe and their fans on a memorable journey this season as the club currently sit 6th hunting down promotion back to League One.

PLAYER TO WATCH - ELLIOTT NEVITT

Like his manager, Nevitt is playing out his first full season with Crewe after his arrival from Tranmere Rovers during the January window in 2023.

The forward failed to find the net in any of his 21 appearances last campaign but has found his form this time around as he has bagged 16 goals in all competitions to help his side in their promotion bid.

Nevitt has enjoyed a good recent run of form finding the net four times in his last seven matches including Crewe’s only goals against playoff rivals MK Dons and survival chasers, Sutton United.

JANUARY BUISNESS

It was a mellow January transfer window for Crewe who saw four new players through the door to aid their push for promotion.

Bell began his business by bringing midfielder Lewis Leigh in on loan from Preston North End before adding Huddersfield’s Josh Austerfield and Brighton’s Ed Turns on loan until the end of the season.

Deadline day saw a return of a fan favourite when forward Charlie Kirk, who was a part of the 2020 League Two promotion winning side, following his departure from Charlton Athletic.

Bell saw two major outgoings during the window.

Academy product Connor O’Riordan completed a permanent move to Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

They also lost loanee Joe White who scored and assisted three times in 25 appearances. He was recalled by Newcastle and has since featured from the bench twice against Bournemouth and Chelsea.
