The Opposition: Morecambe (H)

The lowdown on the Shrimps!

September 28th 2023FGR Media

Rovers play their final game of September on Saturday as Morecambe make the long trip to The New Lawn.

The two teams have become quite familiar with each other over the last few years, having spent six of the last seven seasons in the same division.

However, there's been lots of change at both clubs since our last meeting - so here's the lowdown on Saturday's opponents.

Paragraph Break

IN THE DUGOUT

Derek Adams is now well into his second spell in charge of Morecambe - after a fairytale first stint in charge. The second spell hasn't been quite so plain sailing, with the Shrimps suffering relegation from League One last term.

The 48-year-old won promotion with Morecambe from this division three seasons ago, despite them being favourites for relegation. Adams performed a miracle in leading the Shrimps to promotion via Wembley, but shortly after that, he left to join Bradford City as their boss.

He lasted just 37 matches at Valley Parade - and returned to Morecambe in February 2022, steering the Shrimps to League One safety, but he couldn't keep them up last season.

Having managed over 350 games across League One and League Two, there aren't many coaches at this level as experienced as Adams.

SUMMER BUSINESS

Having suffered relegation to League Two last season, Morecambe were busy during the summer bringing in new recruits.

Likewise, there were some notable departures. None more so than Cole Stockton, who scored 70 goals in over 200 games for the club before joining Burton Albion this summer.

Connor Ripley was another big exit, with the goalkeeper joining Port Vale after a standout season for the Shrimps last term, despite their relegation. The likes of Ryan Cooney and Liam Gibson - who had played key roles in helping Morecambe to League One in the first place - also departed this summer.

Among those to arrive in Lancashire include former Forest Green defender Chris Stokes, former Chelsea forward Charlie Brown and two-time League Two promotion-winner Yann Songo'o.

Stuart Moore has taken the #1 shirt after joining from Blackpool, full-back Joel Senior has played every minute of league action after signing from last season's League Two play-off winners Carlisle United, while Northern Ireland U21s international JJ McKiernan is an attacking midfielder signed from Watford.

ONE TO WATCH

Another player who made his way to the Globe Arena during the summer months was striker Michael Mellon, although he also spent the second half of last season on loan with Derek Adams' side.

Mellon, the son of former Tranmere boss Micky Mellon, saw his campaign cut short by injury last season. However, the 19-year-old Burnley-loanee is fit and firing once again, scoring four goals in seven appearances.

Micky Mellon

According to whoscored.com, only four players in League Two average more shots per game than Mellon's 3.6. The striker, who received a Scotland U21s call-up for the first time earlier this month, was suspended for Morecambe's draw against Swindon last weekend after receiving two yellow cards in their previous fixture.
