The Opposition: Accrington Stanley

September 6th 2022James Williams

FGR host Accrington Stanley in their rearranged fixture on Tuesday night in the first midweek game of the League One season at The Bolt New Lawn.

Ian Burchnall and his side will be looking to get back to winning ways after their 2-0 defeat at the hands of Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.

Here’s all the information you need on Stanley as they come back to Nailsworth after the previous postponement a fortnight ago.

IN THE DUGOUT: JOHN COLEMAN

John-Coleman-Accrington-Stanley

Long standing Accrington manager John Coleman returned for a second spell at the helm back in 2014, meaning he is currently the third longest serving manager in the EFL.

The 59 year old had a lengthy playing career largely carried out in Non-League most notably for Macclesfield, Morecambe and Southport.

After a spell as player-manager with 7th tier side Ashton United, Coleman would head to Stanley for his first stint with the club.

And it was certainly a successful one as Coleman’s 12 and a half year tenure in Lancashire saw three promotions, as Stanley rose back into the EFL for the first time since the clubs reformation in 1968.

Coleman would depart for Rochdale in 2012 before short spells with former club Southport and Irish outfit Sligo Rovers.

But he would return to Stanley in 2014 and gain a fourth promotion four years later, with the club having stayed in League One ever since.

ONE TO WATCH: SEAN MCCONVILLE

Sean-McConville-Accrington

From one long standing Accrington Stanley asset to another, midfielder Sean McConville re-joined the club from Chester back in 2015.

Born in Liverpool, McConville joined Stanley in 2009 aged 20, where he netted 14 times in nearly 90 matches before moving on to Stockport County.

A brief loan spell under Stanley manager Coleman at Rochdale came in 2012 before permanent spells with Barrow, Stalybridge Celtic and Chester.

McConville would return to Stanley and reunite with Coleman in 2015 and become a key player and character, helping the side to League One in the 2017/18 campaign.

In his seven years and counting with the Reds, McConville has now made nearly 400 appearances for the club including his original spell.

The 33 year old has had a strong start to this season, having scored three times in League One action, as well as adding an assist to his numbers.

PLAYED FOR BOTH SIDES

Diallo-Accrington

Former FGR midfielder Sadou Diallo spent last season with Rovers after joining from Wolves following his release from the Premier League club.

He made 16 appearances in all competitions as Rovers won the League Two title, gaining a first promotion to the third tier.

But before arriving in GL6, Diallo had his first taste of senior football with Accrington Stanley, where he spent the 2019/20 season on loan.

The 23 year old now plies his trade with Irish club Derry City, who he signed for back in July.

LAST TIME OUT

Accrington’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end as they fell to league leaders Ipswich Town by two goals to nil at the Wham Stadium.

Both sides had chances either side of the break but couldn’t find the net to forage ahead, Kayden Jackson most notably coming close just after the break for the visitors.

It took the Tractor Boys until 76 minutes to break the deadlock as Conor Chaplin met Lee Evans’ corner to volley in his fourth of the season to put Ipswich in front.

And the win was confirmed with three minutes of normal time remaining as Chaplin’s shot from the edge of the box was deflected home by former Rover Wes Burns.

The result leaves Ipswich top of the tree whilst for Stanley they sit 18th just three points ahead of FGR heading into Tuesday’s clash.
