Super Sully saves Rovers against Scarborough

The match report from the Flamingo Land Stadium

November 4th 2023Sam Yapp

Olly Sully’s stoppage-time goal rescued a replay for Forest Green Rovers, as we drew 1-1 at Scarborough Athletic in the FA Cup first round.

David Horseman was forced into a handful of changes with the losses of Matty Stevens, Callum Morton, Marcel Lavinier and Kyle McAllister through injury.

After a quiet start to the game, Scarborough took the lead on 27 minutes when Alex Wiles drilled a close-range effort into the far corner underneath James Belshaw.

But Belshaw kept Rovers in the game just before half time when he denied Kieran Weledji well from close range.

A response was needed from Rovers who had been dominated during the first period, creating little in the way of chances.

Paragraph Break

Rovers began the second half much improved and had their best chance on 53 minutes when Teddy Jenks found Tyrese Omotoye in the area, but his headed effort went straight to Ryan Whitley.

The game should have been level on 68 minutes when Charlie McCann picked out Jacob Maddox at the back post who somehow managed to drag his effort wide.

McCann was involved again 10 minutes from time when he pounced on a defensive error and drilled a dangerous effort towards goal, which was well beaten away by Whitley.

Horseman turned to his bench late on in the hopes of finding that equalising goal and handed 18-year-old Sully his FA Cup debut and just his second professional appearance.

It was a change that paid off as in the third minute of stoppage time, McCann volleyed a ball back across goal for Sully who was there to bundle the ball over the line.

Sully’s heroic goal earns Rovers a replay, which will see Scarborough make the trip down to Nailsworth with the tie set to take place on the week commencing November 13.
