Forest Green Rovers picked up their first point under Troy Deeney against Gillingham after playing out a 0-0 draw at The New Lawn in Sky Bet League Two.
Rovers came into this one after a 3-0 defeat in the FA Cup away to League One outfit Blackpool, and Gillingham’s last fixture saw them beaten 2-0 by Bradford.
Forest Green had the first chance of the game just a couple of minutes in, with Kyle McAllister finding Ryan Inniss unmarked from a corner, but a slight slip meant he couldn’t keep his header down.
After a quiet period, Rovers came close to taking the lead. After a nice passage of play, Charlie McCann played Callum Morton to his left, and his strike was well saved by Jake Turner. Immediately after, McCann had a headed effort of his own, but this one was easy for the goalkeeper.
26 minutes in, the visitors were awarded a free-kick after Luke Daniels handled the ball outside his area, resulting in a yellow card. The shot from Connor Mahoney, however, was always rising and not on target.
In the 34th minute, a low corner routine from McCann found Matty Stevens, but he sliced the ball over the bar.
Shortly before half-time, Inniss rose highest to meet a dangerous free-kick, and Turner had to tip the ball over his goal to keep it level heading into the interval.
Other than a few Gills corners, there wasn’t much action at either end for the first 10 minutes of the second half.
McCann had a go shortly before the hour mark, but his shot, even with a slight deflection off Stevens, was comfortable for Turner.
In the 62nd minute, Robbie McKenzie tried his luck with a half-volley from outside the box, but it was wide of Daniels’ goal.
Five minutes later, Mahoney tried a low effort from the edge of the area, but dragged it the wrong side of the post.
With 73 minutes played, McAllister did well to cut inside and get a shot away, but it went over the bar.
A few minutes later, a corner from Jonny Williams was met by Timothée Dieng, but Daniels got down brilliantly to push it away. Less than 60 seconds after, Dieng once again almost found the back of the net, with a curling strike narrowly missing the top corner.
Just under 10 minutes before full-time, Williams was played through on the left-hand side and his cross found Ashley Nadesan, but he couldn’t connect cleanly and it was never troubling Daniels.
The remainder of the contest saw neither keeper tested, and the points were shared.
