Forest Green Rovers were denied all three points by a stoppage time penalty as they drew 2-2 with Salford City at the Peninsula Stadium.
Troy Deeney made a double change to his side that drew on New Year’s Day, with Reece Brown making his first start since September,
Salford wasted no time impressing their new manager, Karl Robinson, as Matt Smith’s towering header looped over Luke Daniels to put the hosts ahead inside four minutes.
But Robinson’s first game in the dugout ended on 14 minutes as he was sent to the stands for throwing the ball away as Dom Bernard went to take a quick throw-in.
Rovers tried to take advantage moments later when Fankaty Dabo flashed an effort just wide from close range.
Alex Cairns was finally tested on 35 minutes when Charlie McCann’s low driven effort forced the Salford 'keeper into a fully stretched save.
Then five minutes later, McCann did beat Cairns when his low close ranged effort rolled into the far corner, to bag his first goal for the club.
From that point on it was all Rovers and McCann almost added a second on 55 minutes when he latched onto a searching cross but could only head his effort wide of the goal.
15 minutes later, Matty Stevens 50th Forest Green goal turned the game around when his improvised volley beat Cairns at his near post.
The three points looked all but sealed until the first minute of stoppage when the referee awarded Salford a penalty.
Ryan Inniss and Salford defender, Adrian Mariappa, were both shown red cards following an altercation that followed before Ryan Watson dispatched the spot kick to level the game.
Rovers now have a full week to prepare for their next League Two encounter when we welcome Harrogate Town to The New Lawn next Saturday.
