Rovers claim point in Wrexham draw

The report from The New Lawn

February 28th 2024Jake Williams

A battling display saw Forest Green Rovers earn a point after playing out a 1-1 draw with Wrexham at The New Lawn.

Rovers earned their first home win under Steve Cotterill on Saturday, beating Tranmere Rovers 1-0. Wrexham fell to defeat last time out, losing 1-0 to Gillingham.

Just three minutes into the game, it was the perfect start for Rovers who took an early lead. A lovely ball from Christian Doidge slipped Manny Osadebe through on goal, and he curled it brilliantly into the bottom corner past Arthur Okonkwo.

With 15 minutes gone, Forest Green almost doubled their lead. A surging run from Kyle McAllister allowed him to get into the box and cross from the left-hand side. Doidge got a strong head to it, and was only denied by a good reaction save from the keeper.

In the 24th minute, McAllister unleashed a shot from just outside the area, but it travelled wide of the mark.

60 seconds later, Elliott Lee had a strike of his own from distance, but this one sailed over the crossbar.

10 minutes before half-time, a cross from James McClean flew all the way to the back-post where a wide open Ryan Barnett was waiting, but he couldn’t connect properly and the effort didn’t trouble Vicente Reyes.

Shortly after, Andy Cannon had the ball fall nicely to him, but he too didn’t get a clean shot away and it was comfortable for Reyes.

A couple of minutes before the break, Steven Fletcher tried a volley from close-range, but couldn’t direct it on target.

Paragraph Break

Wrexham almost drew level with the first chance of the second half, after a cross was met by the head of Richard Keogh towards his own goal, but Reyes did superbly to react and keep it out.

On the hour mark, Lee tried to place a low strike into the back of the net, but it was easy enough for Reyes.

Up the other end, Charlie McCann saw his effort take a slight deflection, which redirected it inches past the post.

Around 20 minutes from time, Paul Mullin had two efforts in quick succession. Both were from range, with the first going narrowly over and the second being a lot less threatening.

With 77 minutes played, two substitutes almost got the visitors level. Luke Bolton crossed from the right-hand byline, but Jack Marriott could only find the side netting.

Five minutes later, a ball in by Lee was met by Jordan Davies, but his tame header was straight into the hands of Reyes.

It was then another headed effort for the Red Dragons, this time for Ollie Palmer, but it had too much loop and was easy for the keeper.

Rovers had held strong throughout the contest, but in the second minute of an additional six, Wrexham were awarded a penalty after Jamie Robson brought down Mullin. The striker then stepped up and powerfully converted the penalty he won

Next up for Rovers is a trip up north to face Grimsby, and you can get your tickets, here.
