Forest Green Rovers bowed out of the FA Youth Cup at the second round stage with a 3-1 extra-time defeat at Reading.

Late goals from Shay Spencer and Joe Barough proved the difference, although Rovers put in a brave display at the Madejski Stadium, with Olly Sully scoring a stoppage-time equaliser to force the tie to injury time.

Rovers were unchanged from the last round's victory against Thame United.

The first chance of the game fell to the hosts after 10 minutes. Kiyan Coke-Miles-Smith found himself one-on-one with Josh Shattell, but the 'keeper on loan from Derby County made an impressive stop with his feet.

A few minutes later, Jesse Aldridge - who was named in the first-team squad for the first time last week - tried his luck from distance, only for Harrison Rhone to gather the effort.

Olly Sully had a similar effort saved by Rhone just before the 20th minute - and then Luca Alonzi headed over the bar from Fraser Bell's whipped corner.

Reading took the lead five minutes before the interval when a pull back from the left found Coke-Miles-Smith, with his effort squirming past Shattell.

Rovers nearly found an instant reply when Preston Mason danced into the box and saw his shot saved by Rhone, before the Reading 'keeper was called into action shortly after to deny Alonzi's low drive.

After the break, Sully nearly caught Rhone out at his near post with a cross - and from the resulting corner, Will Merrett nearly bundled the ball over the line after an incredible goalmouth scramble.

In the 70th minute, Zach McKenzie went on a marauding run down the right flank, pulling the ball back to Mason who failed to hit the target.

Five minutes later, Joe Barough almost doubled the hosts' lead, nearly arrowing a shot into the far corner with his left foot.

The Royals were awarded a penalty with five minutes left to play as Piotr Petrynski tripped his man in the box, but Shattell played his part from the spot, diving to his right to save the penalty.

Rovers nearly equalised in the final minute of normal time. Sully was sent through on goal and he rifled the ball towards the net, but Rhone stood firm and beat the shot away.

But there was still time for Rovers and Sully to grab the equaliser, with the striker scoring his fourth goal of the competition to spark jubilant scenes among the FGR squad.

A quiet first period of extra-time passed, but the hosts regained the lead seconds after the restart, with Shay Spencer giving the Royals a late lead.

More heroics from Shattell stopped the scoreline from becoming 3-1, as the 'keeper stood firm as Coke-Miles-Smith attempted to chip him.

McKenzie nearly forced a penalty shootout as he met Bell's chipped free-kick with his head, but Rhone once again stood strong.

In the final seconds of the game, Barough ran through and slotted past Shattell to put the game beyond any doubt.

Despite a valiant effort from Rovers, it was Reading who progressed to set up a third round home tie against Rotherham United.
