Forest Green were beaten on penalties after an entertaining 2-2 draw with Leicester City U21s on Tuesday evening in the National League Cup.

Goals from Nick Haughton and Jose Marquez cancelled out Jake Evans and Toby Onanaye first-half strikes to take the game to spot-kicks.

Leicester took an early lead through Evans after a neat move by the Foxes found the winger in space on the right.

Haughton levelled soon after, Yahya Bamba's low cross was steered into the bottom corner by attacking midfielder.

The Foxes got themselves back in front on 17 minutes after Onanaye slid the ball past Fiachra Pagel in the Rovers net.

Pagel was forced into another fine stop - Logan Briggs found space on the left but the Rovers shot-stopper tipped the effort over the crossbar.

Haughton came close to levelling the game up, but his long-range free-kick came back off the upright.

Marquez got Rovers back on level terms on 70 minutes with a fine header from a drilled corner from the right-side.

Akai Bonnick struck towards goal in the latter stages but his effort deflected to safety for the visitors as Rovers were forced to settle for penalties.

Onanaye scored the winning spot-kick as the visitors took the extra point on the night.
