Report: Forest Green 1-4 Crewe Alexandra

Rovers defeated by Railwaymen

September 9th 2023Jake Williams

A disappointing afternoon saw Forest Green Rovers defeated 1-4 by Crewe Alexandra at The New Lawn.

Despite leading at half-time through Reece Brown, four second half goals saw the visitors leave with three points.

Rovers came into today on a three-game unbeaten streak, and with wins in their last two, while Crewe’s most recent league outing saw them defeat MK Dons 3-1.

It was Forest Green that had the first chance of the game four minutes in, with Kyle McAllister finding Matty Taylor in the box, but his shot was straight at Harvey Davies.

Crewe’s first chance came in the 18th minute, but Conor Thomas’ shot from the edge of the area was straight at Luke Daniels.

Just after the half hour mark, Mickey Demetriou found himself with space to connect with the corner, but his header went just wide of the target.

A couple of minutes later, Crewe came close to taking the lead. A cross from Aaron Rowe was met by Courtney Baker-Richardson, and his header rattled the crossbar. The ball rebounded back to him, but it was skied over the bar.

In the 35th minute, Forest Green took the lead. A corner led to Reece Welch forcing Davies into a good save, and after a bit of a scramble, the ball fell to Brown who found the back of the net.

Crewe almost hit back three minutes later, with Rowe almost curling one into the top corner.

Shortly after, Taylor thought he’d doubled Rovers’ lead after slotting home, but the offside flag was raised, and Rovers had to settle for a one-goal lead at the break.

Paragraph Break

Just four minutes after the restart, Crewe got themselves an equaliser through Chris Long, who found himself through on goal and placed the ball past Daniels.

On the hour mark, the Railwaymen took the lead. A corner from Joel Tabiner was met by the head of Baker-Richardson, with his effort too powerful for Daniels to keep out.

69 minutes in, Crewe made it 3-1, and it was a second for Baker-Richardson. The striker let fly from the left-hand side of the box, beating Daniels and getting his brace.

With just under 10 minutes to play, the visitors got a fourth, and it was substitute Elliott Nevitt who got on the end of Long’s low ball across the box.

Attendance: 1,855 (251 away).
