VsSouthend (H)

February 23rd 2021Noah Dougherty

FGR welcome Southend United to The innocent New Lawn tomorrow, as Mark Molesley's men visit Nailsworth for the first time.

Jake Young stepped off the bench to score the only goal of the game when Rovers travelled to Roots Hall in November.

Here is all you need to know ahead of the game:

What we said:

Newport-FGR-A-Feb21-Mark-Cooper

"There will be some fatigue after the Newport game, but that won't make a difference to us and we're looking forward to it," said boss Mark Cooper.

"The message doesn't change. We've got to run harder than the opposition, we've got to scrap, we've got to fight and we've got to do all of that before we start thinking about football.

"Southend were unlucky on Saturday against Bolton and it was a real freak goal that did that to them in the end. They're not easily beaten and we know that."

Team news:

Dan Sweeney remains side-lined with a knee injury, but Rovers are otherwise without injury or illness concerns.

Key Player: Ashley Nathaniel-George

Southend United completed the signing of Ashley Nathaniel-George in October 2020.

The highly-rated winger put pen to paper on a permanent transfer from fellow League Two side Crawley Town, where he made 57 appearances in two years, scoring 11 goals.

The 25-year-old, who was highly sought after from a number of clubs higher up the football pyramid, was in Arsenal’s Academy until the age of 14 and has since progressed through the non-league game in the last five years.

Last time we met:

Nov-Southend-Adams-Upload

Forest Green returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory at rock bottom Southend United last November.

A second-half goal from substitute Jake Young saw Rovers end a run of four games without victory to push Mark Cooper's side into fourth.

Southend wasted a golden chance to score just before the break with Matt Rush firing wide of the left post from 12 yards.

And Rovers made him pay with Young firing home a right-wing cross from Aaron Collins in the 63rd minute.

Head-to-head:

The two sides have only faced off on one occasion, FGR coming coming up trumps thanks to Jake Young's strike.
