National League leaders Forest Green Rovers host York City at The New Lawn tomorrow evening in the televised 5:30PM kick-off.
Rovers picked up another three points on Tuesday night after a professional away victory at Altrincham.
Ahead of tomorrow’s game, here is everything you need to know about our opponents.
The Opposition: York City
Nickname: ‘The Minstermen’
League Position: 6th
York have a made a solid start to this season, picking up 18 points from their opening nine games. This includes only one defeat which was a 1-0 loss to Solihull Moors last weekend. The Minstermen bounced back from that defeat however in emphatic style, putting five past Carlisle United without reply on Tuesday night.
York are in their fourth campaign back as a National League side after achieving promotion from the National League North in the 2021/22 season via the Play Offs. After finishing fifth, the club saw off Chorley and Brackley in the quarter final and semi-final stages respectively before a 2-0 win over Boston United in the final. Promotion ended a five-year stay at the level after they suffered consecutive relegations from League Two and then the National League Despite relegation from the fifth tier of English football in the 2016/17 season, the club did end their campaign with silverware, lifting the FA Trophy after a 3-2 win over Macclesfield at Wembley.
In The Dugout: Stuart Maynard
Stuart Maynard is the man in the dugout for York City after his recent appointment at the end of August.
He was announced after the Minstermen sacked former manager Adam Hinshelwood, despite beginning the season unbeaten with one win and three draws in his four games in charge.
Maynard was most recently with League Two side Notts County but was sacked at the end of last season after a League Two Play Off semi-final defeat to AFC Wimbledon.
York have won four of the five games under his management, scoring an impressive 15 goals in that time as well.
The 44-year-old will be hoping his side can make that five from six when they take on Rovers tonight.
Player To Watch: Ollie Pearce
It will come as no surprise to National League fans that York’s player to watch is striker Ollie Pearce.
The striker joined the Minstermen at the start of last season from National League South side Worthing.
The 30-year-old would go onto have an extraordinary campaign, scoring 31 goals in 46 games and winning the National League Golden Boot award.
Pearce has continued his fine form into this season, scoring five and creating two in nine National League games so far.
A player who certainly knows where the back of the net is, Rovers will have to be aware of the dangerman in and around the penalty area.
Head-To-Head:
Rovers picked up an impressive four points from six available last season against tomorrow’s opponents and will be looking to replicate the home victory they achieved in November last year.
