Preview: Crawley (H)

August 20th 2021Noah Dougherty

Crawley Town are the visitors to Nailsworth this weekend, as Rovers kick off their fourth League Two game of the season.

Both sides are coming into this one off the back of a 2-1 win in midweek.

Here's all you need to know:

What we said:

Rob-Edwards-Gallery

"It's going to be another tough game. What else was I going to say there," joked Rob Edwards.

"Crawley are coming off the back of a really good win against Salford City so they'll be confident and will come and try to stop us playing our game.

"Crawley are difficult to stop if they're allowed to get going. They get a lot of crosses in the box and play a high-energy game."

What they said:

John-Yems

“We’re looking forward to the game, they’re top of the league," said Crawley boss John Yems. “Forest Green are a good side, they’ve banged on the door for the last couple of seasons to go up, they’ve got good players, they’re a good little club and we look forward to going there. “You wind up where you deserve to be in this league. If beating Salford’s a benchmark then bring it on, let’s keep going."

Team news:

Jordan Moore-Taylor and Josh March are both nearing a return to the squad, while Baily Cargill got his first minutes of the season on Tuesday night.

Udoka Godwin-Malife sustained a collarbone injury in midweek, so he will be unavailable.

Key Player: Ashley Nadesan

Ashley-Nadesan

Striker Ashley Nadesan joined the Reds on a three-year contract in July 2019.

He made his name locally with his goalscoring exploits for Horley Town in the Combined Counties League. Having started his career in their youth teams as a centre-half, he became a prolific striker and over the course of 2013-15 he notched 99 league and cup goals.

That form alerted several League clubs and in July 2016 he joined Fleetwood Town, making his League debut at the start of the 2017-18 season against AFC Wimbledon.

Later that season Ashley joined Carlisle United on loan and he also spent the first half of the 2019-20 season at Brunton Park before returning to Fleetwood.

He found the net eight times for Crawley during the 2020/21 season.

Paragraph Break

Last time we met:

Rovers played out a goalless draw with Crawley Town at the People's Pensions Stadium in League Two. Rovers dominated proceedings in the first-half - and had two close opportunities within the opening ten minutes. Dom Bernard picked up the ball inside the penalty area, before firing his effort over the bar - and that was soon followed by Aaron Collins' free kick catching a deflection at the near post.

Welshman Collins started to prove himself as a real threat to the Red Devils back-line - and had further opportunities to give Rovers the lead. He drove into the penalty area and fired his strike into the side-netting, before his attempted volley on the edge of the penalty area was blocked for a corner. That wasn't the last of Collins' first-half chances - and perhaps his fourth was the closest. A threaded through ball from Cargill allowed the Rovers forward to beat the offside trap and get around Glenn Morris, but with only the goal to aim for, Collins dragged his strike wide. Within the opening few minutes of the second half, Richardson looked like he gave Rovers the lead but was denied by Glenn Morris. The Nottingham Forest loanee raced into the box - and both of his strikes were saved by the home side's stopper.

Fifteen minutes remained when Collins nearly turned provider for Kane Wilson. Once again, he beat McNerney to fire a low cross into the box, but Wilson's strike was deflected from close range.

Head-to-head:

Things are finely balanced in this one, with both sides having won eight of the 22 meetings.

While Crawley were the last team to pick up a win in the fixture, besting Rovers 2-1 at The Fully Charged New Lawn Last season, Rovers were undefeated in the previous six meetings - winning four.

The fixture has seen six draws over the years but the last stalemate in Nailsworth came way back in 2005.
