This season we’ll be hearing from all of the FGR Women stars and giving you an insight into the person as well as the player you see every Sunday.
Next up in the series is Holly Hughes our number three, who chats women’s football in the U.K, FGR memories and the teammate she’d take on a desert island
Name, nickname, age and position?
Holly Hughes, nickname H, 22, left back/wing.
How did you get into football and where did your football journey begin ?
I started playing at 6 years old and joined Dursley Girls when they had just one team (Hattie was in the same team and her dad ran it). My mum found me a team, I think when she realised that all I did at break time was play football with the boys rather than playing made up games with the girls.
Who were your footballing idols growing up?
Steven Gerrard and Alex Scott.
Have you played for any other clubs before FGR Women?
I played for Dursley until I joined FGR at 13 years old, then went to join Bristol City (then Bristol Academy) when I was 15, before returning to FGR Women to play for their first team at 17.
How would you describe yourself as a player?
Simple, I’m not a fancy footballer, but I’ll make the runs and do exactly what’s needed whether in attack or defence.
Do you remember your debut for FGR Women?
For the U14s, we were still in the black and white kit. For the women, I think it was a pre-season fixture against Larkhall, it was absolutely boiling & my other half got far more attention as I think he was playing professionally for the men’s team at the time.
What is your most memorable game in an FGR shirt and why?
In the U16s, we won the county cup final with a late winner. I took a quick throw in and the person on the end of the ball to fire it home was none other than Charlie Rowlands. I’m sure the Bristol Rovers game at the weekend will be incredible.
Thoughts on playing at The New Lawn?
Unlike some of the girls in the squad I’m yet to play there, I think it’s brilliant for the promotion of our team. It boosts the moral in the squad as well as encouraging more FGR fans to come and watch us.
How great is it to see the women’s game growing year on year in England?
It makes me a bit emotional. I could never have imagined it would be like this. It gives me hope that if I have daughters in the future that they will have equal opportunities to their male counterparts.
You have to spend a day on a desert island with one of your teammates, who would it be?
Probably Lucy, I feel like she’d be fairly resourceful (more than me anyway) if we needed to get food etc, and she’d just be good company.
What are your aspirations and goals for this season?
Personally, just enjoy it. I’ve come back to football after a long time out, I played twice last season but work held me back from really giving it a go. I just want to enjoy playing but equally I want the team to succeed and I really think we’ve got the squad to push for promotion this year.
Give one piece of advice to the young FGR Women supporters?
Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something, because you can do anything you put your mind to.
