Opposition Preview: Accrington Stanley

The lowdown on Saturday's opposition

October 4th 2023FGR Media

Rovers make another trip up north on Saturday as they take on Accrington Stanley at the Wham Stadium.

Looking to bounce back from Tuesday night's disappointment at Stockport County, Rovers will be hoping to secure their first win in six games.

However, Accrington stand in the way this weekend - and here's the lowdown on Saturday's opponents.

IN THE DUGOUT

A legend at the Wham Stadium, John Coleman has spent 22 of his 26 years of his managerial career in charge of Accrington. In that time, the EFL's second longest-serving manager has won four promotions and has led the Lancashire club to constant over achievement.

John Coleman

Last season was the first relegation Coleman experienced at Accrington. They established themselves as a League One side, staying in the division for five straight seasons (including two top half finishes) but last season proved a step too far. Accrington finished 23rd in League One last season, three points from safety.

Stanley have had a mixed start to the season under Coleman, winning four, drawing two and losing five of their 11 games so far.

SUMMER BUSINESS

Despite suffering relegation from League One last season, Stanley didn't overhaul their squad over the summer.

Experienced defender Kelvin Mellor, a three-time promotion winner from this level, joined from Crewe, adding experience to a flurry of youthful additions. They include towering forward Josh Andrews on loan from Birmingham City, QPR loanee Joe Gubbins and 20-year-old Ben Woods on a permanent deal from Inverness.

John Coleman's side have also taken three players from Norwich City, loaning in defensive duo Lewis Shipley and Brad Hills, with goalkeeper Jon McCracken joining on an emergency loan from the Norfolk side.

Impressive right-back Mitch Clark and dynamic midfielder Ethan Hamilton earned moves higher up the pyramid, joining Port Vale and Lincoln City respectively. Meanwhile, versatile defender Michael Nottingham and midfielder Mo Sangare made the move north of the border to sign from Livingstone.
