Opposition: Charlton (A)

September 12th 2022FGR Media

Rovers are back in League One action as we head to the capital to take on Charlton Athletic at the Valley on Tuesday evening.

Head Coach Ian Burchnall will be hoping his side can build on last week’s important 2-1 home win over Accrington Stanley.

Here’s a look at the Addicks as we take on a third former Premier League club in our first ever season in League One.

IN THE DUGOUT: BEN GARNER

New Charlton manager Ben Garner joined the club from Swindon Town back in June ahead of the 2022/23 League One season.

The 42 year old never played professional football and went straight into coaching at the young age of 25.

He began working with Crystal Palace in 2005 where he was an academy coach for seven years working with the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

After stints as a first team coach at Palace and West Brom alongside a linkup with Steve Coppell at ATK in India, Garner went to Bristol Rovers for a first full managerial role.

He took the job in late 2019 but was relieved from his duties after less than a year in charge before joining Swindon in July last year.

In his one year with the Robins he led the side to the League Two play-offs where they missed on penalties in the semi-final before Garner left for the Addicks.

ONE TO WATCH: JESURUN RAK-SAKYI

JESURUN charlton player

Charlton winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi joined the club from Crystal Palace on a season-long loan at the start of last month.

The young starlet came through the youth academy with Premier League giants Chelsea before he moved across London to join Palace in 2019.

Rak-Sakyi made his Eagles debut against his former club at the start of last season and went on to have a prolific Premier League 2 campaign, registering 18 goals and six assists in 25 games.

An England youth international, Rak-Sakyi would agree to join Charlton back in early August as he left to embark on a first loan spell in professional football for regular game time.

The skilful wide man has made an impressive start to his time with the Addicks having scored twice and notched one assist in his four League One appearances.

THE SQUAD

On the opposite wing to Rak-Sakyi so far this season has mainly been former Crewe Alexandra ace Charlie Kirk who already has three goal involvements this season.

Eoghan O’Connell has been a mainstay at centre half this campaign with a number of partners including Ryan Inniss and Sam Lavelle.

Duo Scott Fraser and Albie Morgan have been ever present in midfield whilst skipper Jayden Stockley continues to lead the line up top.

Former Swindon trio Jack Payne, Jojo Woolacott and the currently side-lined Mandela Egbo all came with Ben Garner from Wiltshire over the Summer.

FAMILIAR FACE

Wollacott and McCoulsky celebrate vs Charlton

Former Rovers shot stopper Jojo Wollacott joined Charlton this Summer following manager Ben Garner to London from former side Swindon.

The Ghanaian international has played every minute in both League One and the Carabao Cup so far this term keeping two clean sheets.

Wollacott spent time in GL6 with Rovers during the 2019/20 season making 15 appearances in all competitions during his loan spell from Bristol City.

LAST TIME OUT

Charlton surrendered an early lead away to Bolton Wanderers as they fell to a 3-1 defeat at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Addicks midfielder Scott Fraser stroked home the opener inside just four minutes before Bolton replied five minutes later as Conor Bradley bundled home the equaliser.

And Ian Evatt’s side completed the turnaround moments before the break as Kieran Lee met Bradley’s low cross to fire Bolton ahead.

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi came almightily close to a leveller after the break but that miss was punished 15 minutes from time as George Johnston poked home a third.

The result left Charlton in mid table on nine points whilst victory for Bolton put the Whites in eighth just one point outside the play-offs.
