Tyrese Omotoye bagged his first goal in a Rovers shirt on Tuesday night in our 3-1 defeat to Portsmouth. Played through by Teddy Jenks, Omotoye unleashed a fierce effort which was too hot for Pompey 'keeper Ryan Schofield to handle, giving Rovers a deserved lead.
The 20-year-old, who signed for Rovers in January, has had to be patient in the wait for his first goal, but his strike against Pompey was reward for his relentless running. Not many forward players run as hard as the former Belgian youth international, who believes that more goals will follow not that he's opened his account.
“It was a good moment," said Omotoye. "I’m looking to build momentum, help the team and get some more goals under my belt.
“I think I took the goal well, but ultimately it all came from Teddy’s work, so thanks to him.”
“That type of move is something we’ve worked on quite a lot in training. The finish was quite instinctive. I’ve had to work hard for my first goal - and it’s taken longer than I expected. Now I’ve got the first I feel like they can keep rolling in, so I’m happy about that.
“I think the midfield players will become even more familiar with my runs, and I’ll become more familiar with what they provide me, so it’s about continuing to work together."
Omotoye made 17 appearances in League One last season, but he only started five times. He's started both games so far this season, with David Horseman a fan on his energy at the top of the pitch and dedication in training.
The forward is enjoying life under Rovers' new Head Coach - and believes he will keep improving under his management.
“Since the new gaffer has come in it’s been great and we’re building some real chemistry in the team," said Omotoye. "He’s clearly passing his messages on about how he wants to play. It’s early days, and every other teams have had a full pre-season, but in the two weeks he’s been here we’ve learned a lot.
“I see massive development both mid-term and long-term under him. The way he wants to play suits my style of play, which is perfect. It’s about taking on information every day, being humble enough to listen and keep improving."
