Forest Green Ladies manager Craig Darkin described his side’s performance as a mixed bag as there were beaten 5-0 by Callington Town Ladies.
The home team score twice in the first half and early on in the second half to take control of the game, before two more were conceded by Rovers in the final five minutes.
Darkin said the result was a fair one and his side needed to be more of a threat going forward if they were going to take anything out of the game.
He said: “I think we were competitive in small spells and, at this level, that’s not enough.
“I don’t want to say the scoreline flatters them because it doesn’t; they had more chances than us, plain and simple. We didn’t deserve to score today at all.
“I think their heads dropped. 3-0 - that was a good reflection. I think the last two goals were a case of the girls’ heads going.”
The match was played in Callington which is 160 miles from where most of the team is based in Gloucester. Darkin understands this could be have been a factor but doesn’t think that it should be.
“I’m not saying the journey down here was an excuse, it should never be an excuse,” he added.
“At this level, you need to be focusing and concentrating enough to prepare yourself in the right manner for a three hour car journey and then to be able to play. Maybe that’s something we need to talk about.”
Despite the poor showing from his team’s point of view, Darkin knows that Callington are a well-oiled outfit compared to his.
He explained: “Fair play to Callington, they know how to play football. They’re a very experienced team, you can’t fault that.
“We’ve good a very young and new team but even at this level you can’t just jump in. If you’re on a two-on-one you have to delay that space and deny them as much as possible.
“We’re going to go back to the drawing board. We’re going to work on some of these aspects.
“I have no doubt that now, when we get to that final third, we can score goals. Now the issue is getting into that final third in a manner where we have support from behind and support going forward.
“My philosophy is balance, five defensive-minded players and five attacking-minded players. Now we need to stitch that together.”
Darkin and his team don’t have a match this coming Sunday and will next be in action away to Downend Flyers on Sunday, October 21.
