Forest Green Rovers Under 18s slipped to a 2-1 defeat to local rivals Cheltenham Town in the Youth Alliance League on Saturday.

Things looked promising for Rovers in the first half when Luke Hallett converted from the spot, later having a penalty saved, but goals from Robins’ Kian Bedford and Liam Atwell handed the visitors all three points.

Both sides started well, with FGR having chances in the early stages as Seung Woo Yang’s header was saved, and a scramble in the Cheltenham box was eventually cleared.

It wasn’t until the 20th minute that Hallett broke the deadlock, striking from the spot low into the bottom left corner, out of reach from the keeper, as the hosts went ahead.

More chances for both sides followed, before Hallett was brought down in the box to set up another opportunity to double the lead.

It wasn’t to be this time, as the Robins keeper guessed correctly, moving bottom left to block the shot as the first half came to a close.

The second half started with Rovers looking to use their momentum, Dylan Morgan’s seeing his strike blocked off the line after a superb move into the box from the left.

The visitors equalised on the 61st minute with a ball crossed in deep from the right, a free kick being headed down past Louis Owens, into the back of the net.

The Greens almost grabbed the lead straight back when Hallett turned his marker, but his shot flew just over the bar.

Cheltenham sealed the points with fifteen minutes to spare, a low cross from the right was partially stopped by Owens, but he was unable to keep hold of it, allowed for a simple tap in.

Chances from Destiny Oladipo in the closing stages weren’t enough, as Rovers fought to prevent defeat until the final whistle.
