Rovers take point at Solihull

August 9th 2025FGR Media

Rovers were forced to settle for a point against ten-man Solihull Moors at the ARMCO Arena in an entertaining opening day affair.

Goals from Christian Doidge and Nick Haughton looked to have given Rovers all three points before James Clarke levelled late on.

The opening five minutes of the first half started physically from the hosts with Yahya Bamba being brought down for a high foot from Solihull number 12 Darious Lipsiuc, who was shown a straight red in the fifth minute.

Rovers had a series of back-to-back corners in just over a minute, piling pressure on ten-man Moors. Pemberton forced Moors' 'keeper into a smart save, tipping Pemberton's effort over the bar.

However, it was Solihull who hit first on the 15th minute against the run of play when Oscar Rutherford headed past Rovers number one Luke McNicholas after a clean delivery from the right-hand side.

Yahya Bamba swept and effort over the Solihull goal on 21 minutes, and Laurent Mendy lifted a rebounded shot back into the area.

Walker was then forced into another one-on-one stop from Rovers forward Kairo Mitchell after a lifted cross from Neil Kemgni.

Rovers had the ball in the back of the net from a Jordan Moore-Taylor goal; however, the referee called for a foul on the Moors keeper, who was fouled during the build-up.

Both teams started strongly in the early stages of the second half. Bamba dribbled down the left wing and cut the ball back for debutant Nick Haughton, who delivered an excellent cross into the box. However, substitute Christian Doidge's flick-on was well saved by the Moors' goalkeeper. Solihull also aimed to add a second goal by pushing players forward, but Rovers defended against the wave of attacks effectively.

Rovers made their way back into the game in the 54th minute, thanks to striker Christian Doidge. He followed up on his initial shot that hit the bar after receiving a delivery from Nick Haughton.

Haughton played a crucial role in initiating a quick attack, delivering a precise through ball to Jayden Clarke. The Moors goalkeeper parried Clarke's shot, but Walker, under pressure from Kairo Mitchell, was able to smother the ball.

In the 60th minute, Nick Haughton announced himself to the travelling Rovers fans with an audacious left-footed, looping chip from inside the right side of the box, past the flailing Moors keeper, putting Rovers ahead.

Mendy did superbly well to track back when the 70th-minute mark came up to cut out an electric Solihull Moors counter-attack. However, ten-man Moors brought it back to 2-2 after a headed effort from substitute Clarke from the right-hand side beat McNicholas.

In the 88th minute, Rovers earned their 20th corner, and Abraham Kanu had a header that was brilliantly cleared off the line by a Solihull Moors defender. With four minutes of added time, Rovers could not secure a winning goal, and both teams ultimately settled for a draw.

FGR will begin their National League Cup campaign at The New Lawn on Wednesday, 13th August, as they host West Brom U21S.
