Match Report | Slimbridge 0-3 Forest Green

Rovers begin pre-season with a win

July 4th 2025FGR Media

Rovers opened their pre-season campaign with a convincing 3-0 win over local side Slimbridge in front of a bumper crowd at Thornhill Park.

Neil Kengni's first-half strike and goals from Christian Doidge and Tom Knowles was enough for victory over the Swans with a number of players getting minutes.

Rovers went closest early on when Adam May struck the crossbar from distance on on 13 minutes before Jack Smith headed over from close range four minutes later for Slimbridge.

It was Rovers who broke the deadlock through Kengni who picked out the bottom corner on the angle on 25 minutes just two minutes after he'd been denied by a smart stop from Slimbridge goalkeeper, Stephen Sarkodie.

Minutes later Jose Marquez almost doubled Rovers' lead but saw his volleyed effort cannon back off the post and into the arm's of the Slimbridge shot stopper.

Sarkodie was called into action again on 32 minutes when he was forced into a smothering stop on Joe Quigley after Tre Pemberton picked the forward with a long pass.

Rovers had one more chance just before the interval when, after a flowing move, Kengni found Quigley whose shot on the turn was well held by Sarkodie.

Rovers started the second half with planned changes to all outfield players with Fiachra Pagel remaining between the sticks.

We started the second period the better side and went close on 53 minutes when Knowles fired low across goal but his effort rolled past the far post.

Doidge was brought down in the area with the clock ticking down - he dusted himself down and slotted past Sarkodie into the bottom corner.

Soon after, Knowles made sure of the result with a well-timed lob over Sarkodie, finding the bottom corner in the process.
