Match Report | Pucklechurch Sports 2-2 FGR Women

Away side fight back from two goals down

February 10th 2025Peter Hill

Forest Green Rovers Women came from 2-0 down to rescue a point away from home against Pucklechurch Sports on Sunday in league action.

Two goals in the first 25 minutes had seen Pucklechurch take the lead in Bristol before Erin Williams pulled a goal back with a tap in rebound.

Tyra Wilson produced some magic in the second half to equalise for Rovers when her shot flew from outside the box into the top left corner.

Louise Fensome’s side continued to apply pressure after Wilson’s goal but were unable to create the clear-cut opportunity that they desperately needed.

The early chances in the match had gone to Wilson, her first shot saved by the Pucklechurch goalkeeper and then a moment later she had a strike that rolled past the post.

Just after, Pucklechurch took the lead when an effort from the edge of the area beat Katie Thatcher.

The away side looked to get back into the came and Wilson once again had another chance, her shot cleared off the line, that was followed by a powerful Erin Williams effort that forced a smart save from the Pucklechurch goalkeeper.

Pucklechurch went two nil up in the 24th minute when a corner passed Elle Scott and Thatcher and went into the back of the net.

Just before the break, Rovers halved the deficit after Wilson’s initial shot cannoned off the bar, bounced off the line and then fell to Williams to tap home.

Ten minutes into the second half, Fensome’s side levelled as Wilson picked the ball up around 25 yards out and out of nothing cannoned her shot into the top corner.

Forest Green then looked to go in front when Wilson’s long ball found Williams but her dinked effort was denied by the Pucklechurch goalkeeper.

Straight down the other end, Thatcher was there to pull off a world-class double save to keep the game level, one with her foot, the other a diving stop.

Late on, Wilson was able to get in behind the Pucklechurch defence but could only hit the near post with her shot.

The draw means that FGR sit third in the South West Regional Premier Division on 23 points, 13 off league leaders MAP.

FGR: Thatcher (Stiddard 72), Guise, K. Jones, Lowley, Martin, McGrath (Ryder 30), Robbins (Birchley 46), Scott, Taylor (Brittain 75), Williams, Wilson.
