Forest Green Rovers took all three points from their opening home fixture of the season as Charlie McCann scored the winner in the dying embers of a 2-1 win against Altrincham.

The return to The New Lawn was blessed with an early goal as Emmanuel Osadebe’s flick-on header was greeted by Doidge as he struck low and hard into the bottom left corner from the edge of the box.

Just as it looked like the home side would hold on for all three points, a massive deflected effort from George Wilson in the 83rd minute found its way into the back of Jed Ward’s goal.

Finally, Charlie McCann had the ball drop at his feet inside the Altrincham box four minutes into injury time and the Northern Irishman, the coolest man in the stadium, took a touch onto his right foot before curling the ball into the bottom corner via the upright.

The result lifts the Rovers up to sixth in the Vanarama National League with several other results going our way.

It wasn’t the first time McCann went close to scoring our second as he almost doubled the lead within five minutes of Doidge’s goal but his effort left the ground over the top of the North Stand. 

Forest Green Rovers next play on Saturday evening as they travel to Sutton United for a 5:30pm kick off.
