Forest Green Rovers Women picked up all three points at The New Lawn in the South West Regional Women’s Premier Division as they defeated Pucklechurch Sports 4-0.
The home side opened the scoring early, on Saturday night, when Sally Butterfield was able to head home from a Martha Campbell corner.
Three goals in the second half from Katie Jones, Tyra Wilson and Rhian Robbins respectively made sure of the victory as Rovers look to take the momentum into next week’s home match versus AFC St Austell.
Rovers entered the match in fourth place after being defeated last weekend by Marine Academy Plymouth and cup exit on Thursday night to Cheltenham Town but hoped to put that behind them as part of their double header with the men’s side.
It was a strong start for the home side as Leilani Ryder forced a good save from the Pucklechurch goalkeeper and then set up Wilson minutes later, but her header went over the bar.
In the 17th minute, Butterfield put FGR in front as she rose highest from a corner to nod home at the back post.
The pressure continued to come with Jones’ long-range effort hitting the crossbar and Ryder once again nearly setting up Wilson in the middle.
A moment of magic started off a brilliant second half for Rovers as Jones’ free kick from 25 yards out flew by the goalkeeper and nestled into the back of the net.
Ryder was once again involved as this time she managed a brilliant run down the left-hand side and beat the defender but ultimately couldn’t keep her shot down.
The third came soon after for Rovers when Wilson picked the ball up and drove to the edge of the box and unleashed an effort into the bottom left corner.
At this point, the chances were non-stop for Rovers as Wilson’s corner was met by captain Elle Scott who was unable to keep her header down from close range.
The away side grew into the game a bit more in the second half and had a few chances to pull one back which were dealt with by Katie Thatcher.
Robbins completed the victory with two minutes left of the match as some great work from Erin Williams on the right-hand side allowed her to cut the ball back for Robbins to tap home.
