Mark Cooper’s Forest Green Rovers looked ‘a real threat in front of goal,’ as they ran out 6-0 winners at Melksham Town this evening.
Braces from Aaron Collins and Josh March added to strikes from Matty Stevens and Elliott Whithouse, as Rovers made it two on the spin in pre-season.
It was a Collins strike that broke the deadlock for the visitors, the forward driving inside along the face of the penalty area, before deftly curling the ball into the bottom corner with his left foot.
The Welshman’s effort, as it turned out, was what really got Rovers shifting through the gears.
March was next to get in on the action, sliding in to finish off Kane Wilson’s cross from the right with six minutes of the half to play, before Collins capped off the first period four minutes later.
There was no let up after the break for Mark Cooper’s men, Stevens capitalising with almost his first touch to nod home March’s hooked ball.
The former Leamington man then grabbed his second of the night with 48 minutes on the clock, once again sliding in to finish off a low cross, this time from the left.
Whithouse was on hand to round of an enjoyable night at The InfiLED Arena has he picked up Liam Kitching’s clever pass to finish beyond the keeper.
Any concerns about his side’s attacking prowess were put to bed for Cooper, as he talked through a fruitful evening in Wiltshire.
“There were some good finishes tonight and some brilliant balls across the box,” said Cooper.
“We looked as though we were a real threat and capable of scoring goals.
“The result remains immaterial to the game at this point in pre-season. We want to get minutes into the boys and see them playing a certain way.
“We’re progressing well, and still gearing up to the 5th of September.”
March, who added a brace to his strike from Saturday’s 2-0 win at Yate, looked in good form, and Cooper was clearly pleased with his progress.
“Josh March has worked hard over lockdown,” he said.
“He’s lost about a stone and he’s looking very sharp.”
“We have a good athletic group and we’ve got some very talented players.
“We’ve recruited well. We missed Jamille Matt, Dan Sweeney and Udoka Godwin-Malife tonight, but if you add them to this group, we’re looking strong.”
