Match Report | FGR 1-3 Boston Utd

Rovers fall to defeat at home to the Pilgrims

September 19th 2026FGR Media

Forest Green Rovers suffer their first defeat in three matches, going down 3-1 to Boston United.

Tom Cursons put the away side ahead early on, as he beat Ethan Ross in a one-on-one.

Just moments later, Rovers levelled the game through Jayden Clarke's shot from range.

Two second-half goals from Boston, one from the penalty spot and one from a corner, saw the Pilgrims take all three points at The New Lawn.

First half:

Boston United started with intent, scoring in just 45 seconds as striker Cursons broke the line of the FGR defence and beat Ross in a one-on-one, placing his shot in the bottom corner to make it 1-0.

Forest Green reacted perfectly when captain McAllister picked up the ball in midfield and drove at the Boston back line. The captain used Etaluku on the wing, and a one-two pass found McAllister in the box, where he turned his man beautifully, laying the ball on a plate for Jayden Clarke to strike past Boston's Chadwick and drag Rovers back level.

Despite the shaky start, FGR had turned it around and were on top of the game.

McAllister continued to be a creative outlet, putting a ball into the box for D'Mani Mellor, whose shot was quickly blocked by Louis Chadwick.

Sean Etaluku, who caused havoc for the Boston defenders, danced down the left-hand side and put a cross into the box for goalscorer Clarke, whose shot was narrowly blocked.

A mistake at the back from the away side allowed Rovers to win the ball in a dangerous area; however, Tate Campbell was unable to capitalise on the opportunity due to a super save from the Boston shot-stopper.

Clarke was constantly a threat and thought he had given FGR the lead with a wonder strike from outside the box, but was disappointed to see it crash off the crossbar in front of the South Stand.

Robbie Savage's side were on top for most of the first half and, despite going behind to an early goal, will have been unhappy to be going in ahead.

Half-time: Forest Green 1-1 Boston United

Second half:

Rovers started the second half as they finished the first, immediately creating chances. Mellor's header from point-blank range looked certain to be the goal that took the lead, but somehow soared over the bar to the surprise of everyone at The New Lawn.

Despite the Greens being on top at the start of the second half, a foul inside the box gave the Pilgrims a penalty, which Cursons converted, sending Ross the wrong way for his second of the game.

New signing Mees Rijks made his Forest Green debut, coming on for Mellor just before the hour mark in a double substitution that also saw Nick Haughton replace Kelly.

Forest Green continued knocking on the door of the Boston goal, with chances from Mabete and Pemberton saved and blocked respectively; Rovers will have felt hard done by not being level.

Despite this, Boston United extended their lead against the run of play through a corner aimed at the near post, which Lennon Wheeldon flicked into the net.

It was a disappointing defeat in GL6, and Robbie Savage will be frustrated that his team did not capitalise on the chances they created.

Rovers have a week to rest and regroup before they head to south London to face Sutton United.
