Match Report: FGR 1-2 Swindon Town

Late defeat for Rovers

August 16th 2023Jake Williams

A late Frazer Blake-Tracy strike saw Swindon Town take all three points at The New Lawn against 10-man Forest Green.

An early goal from Matty Stevens gave Rovers the lead, before Dan Kemp drew the visitors level just after half-time.

Harvey Bunker was sent off for FGR shortly past the hour mark, and a long range strike from Blake-Tracy in the 95th minute won it for the Robins.

It was Rovers that had the first good chance of the evening just four minutes in. A corner was not properly dealt with and the ball found its way to the taker, Charlie McCann, who let fly to force a good save from Murphy Mahoney.

14 minutes in, Forest Green took the lead. Matty Stevens cut brilliantly into the box from the left-hand side and slotted the ball into the bottom corner from a tight angle, giving him his second goal in as many games.

A minute later, the visitors came close to equalising, with a powerful long-range effort from George McEachran hitting the bar.

It was another good chance for Rovers a few minutes after, with Kyle McAllister finding the head of Tyrese Omotoye, but the striker had his bouncing effort saved by Mahoney.

Shortly after, the home side saw themselves have three marvellous chances in the space of a minute. The first saw Robson have his curling effort parried out for a corner, which subsequently produced two more chances and some incredible finger-tip goalkeeping to somehow prevent a second Rovers goal, with Bunker denied on both occasions.

There was a break in the action after a terrible challenge from Liam Kinsella forced Jordan Moore-Taylor off - and he was replaced by Reece Welch.

Just after play resumed, a Charlie Austin volley that seemed to be heading for the top corner was superbly denied by Luke Daniels to keep his side in front.

In the 35th minute, a nice header from Omotoye set McAllister free on the right-hand side. He cut in and let fly from range, but his shot sailed over.

Almost immediately after the restart, Swindon equalised. A surging run by Godwin-Malife saw him find Brooklyn Genesini, whose cross found Austin’s head. His effort produced a magnificent save from Daniels, but the rebound was put in by Dan Kemp.

For the first time, the game started to settle for the next 15 minutes. But just after the hour mark, Forest Green were down to 10 men after Harvey Bunker received a second yellow card.

With just under 20 minutes, a mix up at the back for Rovers saw the ball fall to Austin, who had his shot comfortably saved by Daniels.

In the 80th minute, Austin found himself with an even better opportunity to give his side the lead, but he fired high from just inside the area.

But his next chance a minute later was the best of the bunch from six yards out, however he struck it straight at Daniels who kept it out and his side in the game.

In the fifth minute of seven added on, it was late heartbreak for Forest Green. A blocked shot fell into the path of Blake-Tracy, who struck from 25 yards out and found the top corner, giving Daniels no chance in the Rovers goal.

A tough defeat to take, but plenty of positives to take for FGR, with Newport County next up in League Two on Saturday. Get your tickets, here.
