Match Report | FGR 1-2 Altrincham

Rovers suffer defeat at home on Bank Holiday Monday

August 31st 2026Harry Andrews

Forest Green Rovers fell to their third defeat in a row at the hands of Altrincham on Bank Holiday Monday at The New Lawn.

Jimmy Knowles put the visitors in front nine minutes into the second half, beating Ethan Ross from range after turning Kyle Kelly in midfield.

Rovers hit back only 60 seconds later through captain Kyle McAllister, who fired past Owen Evans in the Altrincham goal.

Forest Green were then dealt a sucker punch in the final minute of injury time, as Altrincham substitute Kahrel Reddin grabbed the winner for the visitors.

First Half:

Rovers started the game quickly, with Etaluku and Macca linking up high up the pitch to set up a decent cross into the box for Josh Osude, but the forward did not quite get his headed effort right.

Former Altrincham goalkeeper Ethan Ross was called into action just after the tenth minute, as Aidan Barlow tried to curl an effort into the far corner. Only a minute later, Jayden Clarke forced Owen Evans into a quick reaction save, the holding midfielder shooting from around 25 yards out.

Ross had to be alert again to deny Tom Crawford's effort from just inside the box on 20 minutes, before Nick Haughton tried his luck from distance to test Evans between the visitors' sticks; Evans' save was parried to a fellow defender.

The visitors found some joy down Rovers' right-hand side in the 25th minute, as Taylor delivered a good ball across the box which the visitors could not capitalise on. Altrincham captain Tom Crawford then scuffed what looked to be the best chance of the half.

The game was paused in the 37th minute due to a medical emergency in the crowd; thankfully, everyone was okay, and play resumed only a short while later.

Captain Kyle McAllister created some space for himself in the Altrincham area, but scuffed the resulting shot, which keeper Evans saved easily.

Paragraph Break

Half-time: Forest Green Rovers 0-0 Altrincham

Second Half:

Altrincham started the better of the two sides in the second half. Jimmy Knowles received the ball out wide and turned midfielder Kyle Kelly before striking low and hard past Ross in the Rovers net.

Rovers hit back instantly: half-time substitute Ricardo Rees picked the ball up on the left-hand side and drove at the Altrincham defence, creating room for McAllister to run into space. Receiving the cutback from Rees, McAllister smashed the ball past Evans to bring Rovers level.

Substitute Omari Patrick tested Evans from range after Sean Etaluku created a good angle for the wideman cutting in from the right. Stoke loanee Syd Agina went close five minutes later as well, with a low, hard-struck effort blocked by Altrincham defender Jake Cooper.

Fellow loanee Fil Mabete went close twice in quick succession from deep crosses floated into the area by McAllister, with Rovers looking to finally get their noses in front.

Ricardo Rees then went close in the 90th minute, latching onto a long ball played forward by Player of the Match Jayden Clarke, but the striker just fell short of getting something on the end of it as Evans rushed out to smother it.

FGR hearts were broken, though, in the dying embers of the match, as Altrincham substitute Kahrel Reddin found the back of the net after Samuel Taylor's shot looked to be heading wide, sending Altrincham home with all three points and back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

It is another tough result to take for Robbie Savage's side, who face a tough away trip next up against in-form, newly promoted Hornchurch - a must-win fixture for Rovers, who have now lost three league games on the bounce.
