Rovers fall to their first defeat of the season
Forest Green Rovers suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Boreham Wood in the Enterprise National League.
Boreham Wood took an early lead through Zak Brunt, who scored against Rovers in last season's Play-off Eliminator between the two sides.
The Wood doubled their lead after midfielder Lewis Richardson scored from a tight angle.
Current Enterprise National League top scorer Matt Rush made it three to secure the win for The Wood in the second half.
Tre Pemberton was sent off late in the game, adding to Rovers' woes.
It was the worst possible start for Rovers, who conceded in just two minutes. A long ball from Boreham Wood's defensive line was brought down well by Richardson, who slipped Brunt, the number eight, through to lift the ball past Ethan Ross.
Richardson added a goal to his assist in the 19th minute. A whipped ball from Charlie O'Connell into the right channel caught the home side's defence out, finding Richardson, who did very well to beat Ethan Ross at a tight angle.
Robbie Savage's side came close to pulling one back on 30 minutes. Captain Kyle McAllister unleashed a left-footed strike from the edge of the box which cannoned off the post, with fully stretched 'keeper Luca Gunter beaten.
Etaluku went into the referee's book just before the break after the number 20 threw the ball away in frustration at a decision.
The second half started with more of the same as Richardson played the ball across the box, but Rush was unable to get clean contact on the ball thanks to interference from Tate Campbell.
Half-time substitute Nick Haughton played a great through ball to Ricardo Rees, but the Welshman's cross was blocked, cutting out any opportunity of an effort on goal.
Ten minutes after the restart, Rush bagged his sixth goal in three games after some quick passing football cut Rovers open to make it three for the visitors.
Ross was forced into a good save down to his right-hand side to keep the score respectable.
The afternoon would only go from bad to worse for Rovers, with returning right-back Tre Pemberton being sent off after a poorly timed challenge.
The result means that Forest Green's perfect 100% winning start to the season has come to an end. Robbie Savage now has six days to pick his side up before they travel to Fylde for a Bank Holiday weekend fixture under the lights.
