Match Preview – Truro City (H)

Rovers welcome Truro City to The New Lawn on Tuesday, 30th December. It is the first time in nine years that the Cornish side has visited GL6.

The last meeting came in the FA Trophy on 10th December 2016, when the match ended in a draw. A replay followed on 13th December 2016, with Rovers securing a 1–0 victory in Cornwall after extra time, courtesy of substitute Darren Carter, who scored the winning goal in the 109th minute.

The Opposition: Truro City

League position: 24th
Nickname: ‘The Tinners’

As the first Cornish side to compete in the National League, The Tinners have found life challenging and currently sit at the bottom of the table. A winless run throughout November and early December saw them drift away from the safety places.

However, Truro have shown signs of improvement in recent weeks, recording two impressive victories: a 2–0 home win over Wealdstone, followed by a 1–0 triumph against Yeovil Town on Boxing Day. Those results have moved the Cornish side closer to the dotted safety line.

In the Dugout: John Askey

John Askey joined Truro in the summer of 2024. It is fair to say Askey revolutionised the club, guiding them to the National League South title in his first season in charge.

It was a nail-biting end to the campaign, with Truro and Torquay United both finishing on 89 points. Only two goals separated the South West rivals, with Truro ending the season with a goal difference of +33 compared to Torquay’s +31.

If anyone could steer Truro through their first-ever season in the National League, it would be Askey, who brings a wealth of experience from spells with Hartlepool United, York City and a five-year tenure at Macclesfield Town between 2013 and 2018.

Player to Watch: Dominic Johnson-Fisher

Dominic Johnson-Fisher joined Truro in January 2024 on a free transfer, departing Whitehawk after six months with the Isthmian Premier Division side.

Johnson-Fisher has made 22 league appearances for The Tinners so far this season, scoring three goals and providing one assist. Across all competitions, the forward has registered five goals and two

Rovers will need to remain alert to the threat posed by the Cornish number 11, particularly with Truro arriving in a confident mood following their Boxing Day victory.
