Rovers welcome 'The Spitfires' to The New Lawn this evening

October 28th 2026Daniel Withers

Forest Green Rovers return to The New Lawn this evening for a 19:45 kick-off against Eastleigh.

The Spitfires touch down in Nailsworth, three points ahead of the hosts, after an impressive 4-2 home win over Boston United.

Rovers will hope to secure their first league win of the month after Saturday's abandoned game at Barrow.

FGR will want a repeat of the last meeting between the two sides, when Rovers came away with all three points after a 4-2 comeback.

Here's everything you need to know ahead of the evening kick-off in GL6.

The Opposition

Name - Eastleigh

Nickname – The Spitfires

Year Founded - 1946

League Position – 15th (18 points)

Eastleigh had a bright start to the campaign, winning three of their opening four games.

However, since beating Boston, Eastleigh have struggled in the league, with just one win in their most recent nine games.

This has left the Hampshire outfit in the lower mid-table, three points above Rovers.

Eastleigh have frequented the National League since the 2014/15 season, with their highest finish of fourth coming in the following season.

The Spitfires have largely remained in mid-table throughout most of their National League campaigns, although they did record two top-seven finishes in their first two seasons in the National League.

So far this season, Eastleigh have beaten Gateshead, Scunthorpe, Hartlepool United, Carlisle, and Boston United.

Rovers have dominated this fixture over the years, with five wins compared to the visitors' one.

Paragraph Break

The Manager – Matt Gray

Matt Gray was announced as Eastleigh manager in May, replacing interim manager Richard Hill.

Although this is Gray's first season as manager at Eastleigh, it's not his first role within the club.

The 44-year-old was assistant manager for the Spitfires from 2007-2011 before becoming assistant manager at Aldershot and Crawley.

His first managerial role came for Sutton in 2019 where he led the U's to the EFL in just his second season at the helm.

Gray was relieved of duties by Sutton in December 2023 following a run of poor performances before taking up the manager's position at Eastbourne Borough.

Now at Eastleigh, Gray has won six, drawn three and lost six in his first fifteen games in charge.

One to Watch – Aaron Blair

Aaron Blair is Eastleigh's top scorer this season with seven goals in 14 games.

The striker bagged a hat-trick in his side's last outing with a brace inside the opening half an hour before netting his third in the 94th minute.

The 26-year-old is in his second season at the club after joining from Maidstone United.

Blair scored 17 goals last season in the league and topped the charts for the Spitfires in terms of numbers.

The #11 is currently joint third in the golden boot race this season and hasn't gone more than three games without a goal this campaign.
