VsCambridge (A)

March 19th 2021Noah Dougherty

We're on the road at high-flying Cambridge United this weekend.

Mark Bonner's second-placed U's have been leading the charge for much of the campaign, so Rovers know they'll have their work cut out.

Here is all you need to know ahead of the game:

What we said:

Dec-Harrogate-Cooper-Upload

"People can say to me that it's big game but we don't get any more than three points if we win it," explained Mark Cooper.

"It's a big game in terms of second vs third but it's another game and nothing has changed for us.

"We may have to play without any orthodox midfield players, so that's a really exciting challenge."

What they said:

Bonner-Cambridge

"When we played Forest Green last time we saw how good they are," said U's boss Mark Bonner.

"It's no shock that they're around where they are, and should they win the games in hand they'll be in an even stronger position.

"They've got real attacking qualities in their team and Mark Cooper's teams play good football."

Team news:

Dan Sweeney remains on the long-term road to recovery, while Ebou Adams and Jordan Moore-Taylor are doubtful.

Elliott Whitehouse is suspended.

Key player: Paul Mullin

Mullin-Cambridge

A former Liverpool youth player, Paul Mullin later moved on to Huddersfield, where he also enjoyed a brief loan spell with Vauxhall Motors.

A mobile and intelligent striker with excellent ball control, his career accelerated after signing for Morecambe in 2014, where he netted 28 goals in 140 appearances.

His prowess alerted Swindon, who snapped up the 25-year old during the summer of 2017. He scored ten times in 47 matches for the Robins, prior to relocating closer to home when Tranmere came calling 12 months later.

Mullin collected a first career promotion with Rovers in 2019, scoring 10 goals along the way, whilst making a further 27 appearances in League One last season. He signed a loan deal at the Abbey Stadium in late January, bagging two goals in six matches, prior to agreeing a permanent deal during the summer, retaining his services until the close of the 2020/21 season.

Last time we met:

Dec-Cambridge-Highlights-Matt

Goals from Aaron Collins and Jamille Matt secured all three points for Forest Green Rovers against Cambridge United in mid-December. Buoyed by the return of fans to The innocent New Lawn, two second half goals handed Rovers the points after an excellent display.

Head-to-head:

If football were played on paper, this one would look good for Rovers. Mark Cooper's men having won all of the last five meetings between the sides, including two at The Abbey.

In total, Rovers have beaten Cambridge 10 times, while the U's have won just five. This fixture has seen 10 draws from the 25 encounters.
