Forest Green Rovers Under 18s ran out 3-0 victors over local rivals Cheltenham Town in Merit League Two on Saturday.

Rovers found their rhythm by the 21st minute after midfielder Sam Hendy put the home side ahead with a well taken finish.

Two late free-kicks from his midfield partner Dan Bradshaw in the first-half saw Forest Green put a real stamp of authority on the game as they put themselves three goals to the good to ensure maximum points.

On a windy morning at the Royal Agricultural University, it was a good start by Forest Green who enjoyed an early spell of possession.

The returning Jay Malshanskyj was the main threat for the home side early on with his directness and bravery to take on the full-back proving a real problem, with the winger unable to convert Isaiah Jones’ back-post cross goalwards.

However, he would soon turn provider for the opening goal, as his pace allowed him to lead a sharp counter-attack before crossing towards striker Dan Ogunleye. His cross was initially cleared but the ball fell perfectly for the on-rushing Hendy to cleverly volley home the game’s opening goal.

This goal opened the floodgates for Forest Green who began to look much more like the side that both staff and spectators were used to seeing.

In the 44th minute, Ogunleye won a free-kick just outside the area after persistent work against the two Cheltenham defenders. Bradshaw stood up to the task and curled in a fantastic effort that was put right into the top corner before bouncing in off the crossbar.

Just a few seconds later, the midfielder would almost replicate his technique with another wicked free-kick that curled straight past goalkeeper Alex Avenwell and into the back of the net.

The second half was something of a dust-settler from both sides with Forest Green putting in a professional performance to ensure they came away with all three points.

Cheltenham’s Olly Price was sent off for the away side as frustrations boiled over for the Robins.

FGR will be hoping to continue their impressive form with another victory when they travel to Plymouth Argyle next Saturday.
