Magic McAllister shines in Mariners draw

Rovers forced to settle for a point

November 19th 2023Sam Yapp

Kyle McAllister scored twice as Forest Green Rovers were made to settle for a point, drawing 2-2 against Grimsby Town at The New Lawn.

David Horseman kept with a back three for this clash and made four changes to his side that defeated Scarborough Athletic 5-2 in midweek.

Rovers started the better and came closest inside 10 minutes when Jacob Maddox’s deflected cross almost snuck in at the near post, but Harvey Cartwright was able to push the ball behind for a corner.

McAllister was next up to be denied inside 20 minutes when his distanced effort struck the bar with Tyrese Omotoye unable to latch on to the loose ball.

10 minutes later, Maddox was kept out again when he latched onto a loose ball in the area, but Cartwright was out quickly to smother his attempt.

But all of Rovers pressure paid off on 37 minutes when Callum Jones was brought down in area allowing McAllister to step up and dispatch his second penalty in five days.

And just before half time, McAllister doubled his and Rovers' tally when he rounded Cartwright before cheekily chipping the keeper and two Grimsby defenders on the line.

Paragraph Break

It was a different story however in the second half as the visitors responded well, grabbing a goal back on 66 minutes when Gavan Holohan drilled a low effort past James Belshaw from close range.

Donovan Wilson salvaged a point for Grimsby on 80 minutes when he pounced on a defensive error, allowing him to fire a one-on-one effort past an onrushing Belshaw.

Rovers almost instantly regained the lead when Omotoye met a Fankaty Dabo cross, but his headed effort was saved by Cartwright.

In additional time, Sean Robertson went close to taking all three points when Teddy Jenks pulled back a cross back towards him, but he sent his effort over the bar.

Rovers are back in action next Saturday as, for the second time this season, we travel to Walsall for our League Two clash.
