Manager Mark Cooper says he wants to take another step forward next season after seeing his side fall in the play-offs.

Since his arrival, Cooper has seen Forest Green Rovers progress season-on-season, having secured the club’s first promotion to the Football League, maintained that status in his second full season and then gained a fifth-place finish in his third campaign.

Unfortunately, the season came to an abrupt end as FGR fell by a single goal on aggregate to Tranmere Rovers in the semi-finals of the League Two play-offs, Micky Mellon’s side going on to gain promotion in the final with a last-gasp winner over 10-man Newport County.

The pain and the disappointment of the defeat to Tranmere was clear for everyone to see at the final whistle at The New Lawn last month.

But Cooper is hoping to use those emotions as a catalyst to go even further next season and see the club make another huge stride forward.

“It’s pretty clear to me that you either win or you lose,” he said.

“We did well, but we didn’t win and I want to do that next year.

“It hurt, but that has to drive us on next year.”

Cooper and his management team are already preparing for the 2019/20 season with the addition of experienced defender Matt Mills to add to Taylor Allen, the exciting teenage forward who joined from Nuneaton Borough towards the tail end of last season.

Having fallen just short of the automatic promotion spots last term, conceding a two-goal lead away at Crewe Alexandra to lose 4-3 proving the decisive game that ended those hopes, Cooper is hoping the experience of someone like Mills, older brother of left-back Joseph, will help the team bridge that gap next time out.

“Progression is important for us, and for us to progress, we’ll probably have to get promoted,” he added.

“We were five points short in the end and I look back at the Crewe game.

“Although we didn’t know it at the time, we had automatic promotion in our grasp and that is why you bring people like Matt in.”
