Forest Green are thrilled to unveil striker Jamille Matt who arrives on a one-year deal from Newport County.

The 6ft4ins front man was a mainstay of County’s side last season, but the pandemic has led front to an enforced exit of players from Rodney Parade, allowing Head Coach Mark Cooper to pounce.

The 30-year-old Jamaican-born striker was an influential figure for County since signing in the summer of 2018 from Blackpool, amassing 97 appearances for Mike Flynn’s side.

He formed a potent partnership with Padraig Amond and scored 20 goals in his first season in Wales, including the powerful header in the famous FA Cup win against Leicester when he climbed above Wes Morgan.

On arriving at the New Lawn, Matt cited his ‘desire’ to push the club forward, saying: “I’m delighted to sign for Forest Green and Mark Cooper was the main factor on me signing. I have a lot of experience and I want to use this to help the team and match their ambition and desire to be successful.”

Cooper was ecstatic to capture the experienced Matt, who has also starred for Plymouth Argyle, Grimsby Town and Blackpool in a stellar career.

“He knows how to be successful at the level, not old in terms of years, but in games he is vastly experienced.”

Cooper insists Matt will bring something different to the table.

He added: “Jamille brings a different weapon to our armoury. We have not had a focal point since Christian Doidge left. He can be a target man and gives you another option."

Matt becomes Rovers’ seventh signing of the summer as Cooper and Director of Football Richard Hughes continue to shape their squad.
