Starting his coaching journey at the age of 22, Burchnall’s pathway into first-team management perhaps wasn’t the most traditional.

University of Leeds gave the new Rovers boss his first coaching opportunity – winning the British Championship in 2010 and juggling responsibilities with part-time academy coaching roles with Bradford City and Leeds United.

Experience working with Brian Deane at the Bantams allowed Burchnall to begin his club career coaching overseas with Norwegian outfit Sarpsborg, becoming the former Sheffield United striker’s assistant at the Eliteserien side.

When Deane returned to England, Burchnall decided to stay in Norway – taking on a coaching role with Viking before becoming Head Coach under difficult circumstances, with budgets restricted within the club, players and staff forced to move on.

The 39-year-old had settled in Scandinavia - and interest in the young, up and coming coach reached neighbouring Sweden when Östersund came calling for Burchnall's services.

A small town in the Jämtland county, best known for its winter sports before the arrival of Graham Potter - who guided the ÖFK from the fourth tier to the Europa League knockout stage and Swedish Cup triumph within seven years.

Burchnall took charge of the side back in 2018, guiding the club to within one point of their record finish in Allsvenskan in the previous campaign - and a further two seasons before moving back to the United Kingdom.

His first role in the English pyramid came with National League side Notts County back in March last year, where he secured victory in his first league match in charge over Wrexham.

Results steadily improved following Burchnall's appointment - and he guided the Magpies to a 5th-placed finish, securing a play-off eliminator tie with local rivals Chesterfield. A late goal from former Rovers man Mark Ellis set up a trip to Torquay United in the semi-finals.

Torquay netted twice in extra-time following a 2-2 draw at Plainmoor which meant they travelled to Bristol for the play-off final. But County tried their luck again this season, only to be defeated by eventual finalists Grimsby Town in the final minute of extra time.

Burchnall now joins Rovers on their journey into the third-tier of the EFL for the first-time in their history, with encounters against Portsmouth, Derby County and Ipswich Town to look forward to in the upcoming season.
