Get the lowdown on Exeter

January 4th 2022James Williams

Rovers are back at The Fully Charged New Lawn once again as they take on play-off chasing Exeter City on Tuesday evening.

Here’s everything you need to know about the travelling Grecians.

MEET THE MANAGER: MATT TAYLOR

Matt Taylor took over as the manager of Exeter City back in the summer of 2018, replacing long standing gaffer Paul Tisdale.

Taylor, a former defender spent four years of his playing career at St James Park playing over 150 games for the club.

He also had short spells with the likes of Cheltenham Town, Charlton Athletic and Newport County.

Since becoming the Exeter manager, the 39 year old has led the side to two ninth place finishes and a play-off final, which they lost to Northampton Town two seasons ago.

Taylor’s Grecians currently sit in 8th place, largely helped by the sides impressive 15 league match unbeaten run earlier this term.

KEY PLAYER: MATT JAY

Exeter City captain Matt Jay is a very familiar face at St James Park, being involved with the club for almost 20 years having played over 100 games thus far.

Spending his youth career in the clubs academy set-up, Jay made his debut for the Grecians in an EFL Trophy defeat against Wycombe Wanderers in 2013.

After short loan spells with Weston Super-Mare, Hayes & Yeading United and Truro City, Jay was ready to make his way into the first team picture.

The attacking midfielder’s breakout season came last year as he made 44 appearances scoring 18 goals, the joint third highest in League Two.

The 25 year old has had an impressive start to this season netting 10 times alongside two assists in the 22 league appearances he’s made.

LAST TIME OUT

Exeter City’s first league game in three weeks ended in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of high flying Sutton United.

It was the worst of starts for Exeter, as former FGR striker Omar Bugiel’s header put the hosts in front inside the opening 10 minutes.

That lead lasted all of a minute however as Timothee Dieng latched onto a fumbled Jake Caprice long shot to send the travelling Grecians fans wild.

Into the second half and both sides had chances, Exeter’s best seeing Padraig Amond head wide of goal in front of the away end.

But just before the end of the 90, a Sam Stubbs foul on Richie Bennett in the area allowed Robert Milsom to step up and take all three points for Sutton.

The 2-1 defeat leaves Exeter just outside the play-offs, whilst the home side are amazingly into the top three in their debut EFL season.

LAST TIME WE MET

Forest Green Rovers and Exeter City played out a 0-0 stalemate at St James Park earlier this season in September.

Cameron Dawson did very well to deny Kane Wilson early on as FGR looked to find the opener on what was a sunny Devon afternoon.

Rovers really should been ahead at half-time, with Jamille Matt and Nicky Cadden both coming close before the interval.

Sam Nombe came closest for the Grecians in the second half before Rovers defender Bailly Cargill was inches from scoring a brilliant volley.

The draw was the start of a five game league unbeaten run for Rovers whilst Exeter made it four league games without defeat.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Rovers and the Grecians met several times in the mid 2000’s during Exeter City’s five season stay in the fifth tier.

The sides’ EFL record sways in favour of the Devon outfit, who have won four and drawn four of the nine League Two meetings, which have all come in the last five years.

Goals from Reece Brown and Liam Shephard helped FGR to their only League Two win over Exeter back in October 2018.
