February 23rd 2022James Williams

Rovers begin a run of three consecutive league games on the road this Saturday as they head east to take on Crawley Town.

Rob Edwards’ side will be hoping to bounce back from Saturday's loss to Walsall, a first in 20 games.

Here’s the lowdown on the Red Devils ahead of our trip to The People’s Pension Stadium.

MEET THE MANAGER: JOHN YEMS

John-Yems

Crawley boss John Yems became the Red Devils manager back in December 2019 and has now spent over two years in Sussex.

The 62-year-old had his first taste of coaching with now seventh tier Horsham where he managed for two years during his time coaching at the Fulham academy.

Yems has taken on a variety of roles during his career with the likes of Millwall, Torquay United, Exeter City and Bournemouth.

After some years working as a scout, Yems became the Crawley manager and had his contract extended just a month later.

The London-born boss has led Crawley to two mid table finishes so far and looks to be heading for a third, as his side currently sit 15th in the table.

KEY PLAYER: JACK POWELL

Jack-Powell-Crawley

Crawley midfield maestro Jack Powell joined the Red Devils from Maidstone United back in the summer of 2019.

The 28-year-old began his career as a youth player with West Ham United but ended up making his senior debut for their fierce rivals Millwall.

After three years with the Lions and a couple of loan spells, Powell joined Ebbsfleet United, where he shone during a two year spell in the National League.

A season with Maidstone followed before Powell joined John Yems’ side, heading to Aldershot Town on loan just a month later.

Fast forward three years and the midfielder has played in all 30 of his sides league games this season, scoring once as well as assisting four times.

LAST TIME OUT

It was a first defeat in five for Crawley Town as they were defeated 1-0 at home by an in form Hartlepool United.

Crawley however came almightily close to opening the lead early on, as Jack Powell’s long range effort crashed against the upright. A sure goal of the season contender had the net have bulged.

But the away side took the lead just before the break as former Cardiff and Birmingham striker Omar Bogle curled in well from the edge of the box.

Both sides had their second half chances and Bogle came close to grabbing a second, but the Pools held on to their 1-0 lead and went back up North with the three points.

Manager John Yems was handed a red card as the game finished to compile the Red Devils misery as they now have only won one of their last nine at the People’s Pension Stadium.

LAST TIME WE MET

Crawley-home-Aug-21-Cadden-group

Rovers ran out 6-3 winners against Crawley Town at The Fully Charged New Lawn back in August in a League Two cracker.

Goals from Nicky Cadden and Matty Stevens had the hosts ahead on two occasions in the first half only for both to be cancelled out by a Jake Hessenthaler brace.

Into the second half and Rovers took no time regaining the lead as Jamille Matt headed home just two minutes after the break.

Two goals in two minutes for Cadden sealed an impressive hat-trick for the Scot before a deflected Jake Young effort made it six in Nailsworth.

Kwesi Appiah grabbed a late consolation for John Yems’ side as Forest Green made it four wins from four at the start of the season.
