Five-star Rovers secure second round tie with Blackpool

FGR 5-2 Scarborough Athletic

November 15th 2023Makayla Thomas

Forest Green Rovers secured a place in the FA Cup second round after a comprehensive 5-2 win against Scarborough Athletic.

Forest Green Rovers’ last outing was a League Two clash away at Tranmere, which ended in a 3-0 defeat. However, Scarborough head into the game on a high after their last outing finished in a 3-1 victory against Alfreton Town.

Forest Green took the lead just four minutes in, after a cross from Fankaty Dabo found Teddy Jenks in a dangerous area and his deflected shot found the back of the visitors' net.

However, a chance for Scarborough came just five minutes later. Kieran Weledji saw his effort saved by James Belshaw, who was able to get hold of the ball.

In the 14th minute, another chance came for the hosts as Jenks found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but saw his shot drag just wide of the post.

Rovers doubled their lead just over the quarter of an hour mark. A Ryan Whitley foul on Troy Deeney saw the hosts given a penalty, and Kyle McAllister’s spot-kick was placed into the top right of the net.

On the half hour mark, Dabo grabbed his second assist of the night as his low pass found Jamie Robson in the visitors’ box, who was able to slot the ball into an open goal.

Four minutes later, a brilliant corner-routine from the hosts secured them their fourth goal of the evening and enabled Harvey Bunker to bundle the ball over the line.

Another chance for Rovers in the 37th minute saw Dabo take a shot from right side of the box, but it went wide of the woodwork.

However, in the 41st minute, the Seadogs got one back, making it 4-1. A shot from Alex Wiles was out of Belshaw’s reach, and he saw his 25-yard effort hit the back of the home side’s net.

Another chance for Rovers came just five minutes after, as a through ball found McAllister who managed to chip the ball over the goalkeeper, but also over the crossbar.

Scarborough had the first chance of the second half. Wiles fired a shot from range, but the ball was blocked by Darnell Johnson.

In the 73rd minute, Jenks had a chance to net home another goal for Rovers, but his effort was deflected.

Just three minutes later, Rovers made it five. The ball fell to Tyrese Omotoye, who managed to cut inside and take a left-footed shot which found the bottom left of the net.

Scarborough grabbed themselves a second goal in the 89th minute. A cross from the right met Michael Coulson, who headed it home just out of Belshaw’s reach.

Despite Scarborough having some last-minute chances, Rovers managed to secure themselves qualification for the second round of the FA Cup. David Horseman's side will face Blackpool on December 2.

Rovers are back in action on Saturday as they take on Grimsby at The New Lawn, and you can get your tickets here.
