Forest Green Rovers begin their FA Cup campaign this season against South Shields on Saturday.
Ahead of Rovers' first FA Cup clash of the 2022/23 campaign, we're taking a look back at some of FGR's most memorable matches in the competition.
One of Rovers’ most impressive victories in the competition came against Rotherham, who at the time were playing in League Two – while Jim Harvey’s team were competing in the National League.
It wasn’t the first meeting between the sides that season, with Harvey’s men having taken the tie to a replay following a 2-2 draw in Nailsworth. While Rovers would be the underdogs going into the match, the visiting Millers would find themselves fortunate to force a replay.
Chris O’Grady’s 84th minute strike ensured that Rotherham would set up a replay at home with a place in the second round at stake.
Everything seemed to come together for Harvey’s side during the replay in Yorkshire, as goals from Chris Giles, Simon Clist and Stuart Fleetwood fired Rovers to their first victory over a Football League side and into the next round.
Rovers would go on to knock yet another League Two side out of the FA Cup a year later, with high-flying Rochdale the opposition in the second round during the 2008/09 season.
Harvey’s side were struggling in the National League at the time, with their tie against the Dale providing a massive opportunity for Rovers to progress into the third round for the first time in their history.
While Rochdale would boast a young Adam Le Fondre in their attacking line, it would be Rovers’ Jonathan Smith and Josh Low who scored the crucial goals in the 27th and 56th to send FGR to round three.
Let's look at Rovers’ most famous FA Cup fixture to date, with their third round clash at The New Lawn against Derby County the final chapter of a historic run in the 2008/09 season.
A seven-goal thriller in front of 4,836 fans would take place in Nailsworth, with Rovers pushing the Championship side who had only just been relegated from the top-flight right to the limit.
Smith and Alex Lawless would net early goals to give the hosts a brilliant chance of progressing, before two quickfire Derby goals meant that the sides would go into the break level.
Paul Stonehouse would fire Rovers back in front in the 72nd minute to set up a thrilling final 20 minutes at the New Lawn. Derby’s Paul Green levelled the tie almost immediately after with the match seemingly destined to result in a replay at Pride Park.
It wasn’t to be though, as a valiant Rovers side would be heartbroken following a late penalty scored by Steve Davies with just three minutes remaining to send the Rams through to the fourth round of the competition.
Another highly-placed League Two opposition, AFC Wimbledon would be the challenge for Rovers in the first round of the competition in 2015 as Any Pennock's side travelled to Kingsmeadow.
The Dons would go on to clinch promotion to League One via the play-offs that season, but they wouldn’t be able to overcome the test provided by Rovers. Darren Carter opened the scoring in the 6th minute, only for Callum Kennedy to level the scoring with 24 minutes played.
However, while many thought the game would go to a replay, Elliott Frear’s injury time goal secured a late victory and sent Rovers into the second round of the competition.
