We spoke with central defender Gavin Gunning ahead of us hosting Notts County at The New Lawn tomorrow.
He tells us how the weekend without a game impacted the squad, his own good form and what to expect from Notts County.
Gav, a rare weekend off. How did you spend it?
Just with the family. I had a quiet weekend with the missus and the little lad just chilling out.
Was it a welcome break? Or would you have liked to play the game at the weekend?
Obviously we’d have liked to play the game, but I think it has worked out okay for the lads to get a rest because there have been a lot of games recently, so it’s probably worked for us rather than against us.
Your last appearance was your 50th for Forest Green. Is it nice to have that number under your belt?
Yeah it’s been good, and I’ve enjoyed it. Obviously last season was a struggle for the team and the club as a whole, but this season’s been a lot different.
Is there a different feel about the place?
When I came in [last January] we were bottom of the league so it we were happy to keep the team up and then kick on this season.
Looking ahead to the weekend then, Notts County coming down. Their league position is clear to see but they’ve changed a lot during January and you’ll be expecting a side to come out fighting.
It’s probably an unfortunate time to have to play them. They’re going to be right up for it and they’ve signed some good players but we’re a good side and we’ll back ourselves.
You guys must be going in full of confidence though?
We’re not going to be worried about Notts County coming to us. We’re going to be at home and we’ll try and dominate possession and have that killer touch in front of goal.
Defensively, you’ve kept a few clean sheets recently. It must be nice for confidence?
We have one of the best defensive records in the league and if we hadn’t conceded so many penalties then we might have the best record so without all of those stupid penalties we would have been up there.
You look like you’re enjoying your football at the moment as well, you’re throwing in a couple of turns to lose strikers.
I’m enjoying it. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a run of games like this without getting injured so I’m really happy to be playing football and enjoying it.
