Forest Green Rovers progressed to the First-Round proper of the FA Cup as they defeated National League South side Weymouth 2-0 at The New Lawn.
Goals from Liam Sercombe and substitute Christian Doidge proved to be the difference on the afternoon as Rovers eased to victory.
We will discover their opponents for the next round at 7PM on Monday night.
The game’s first chance came in the second minute as winger Tom Knowles cut onto his right-foot but saw his effort cannon back off the near post.
A dominant first 20 minutes saw Rovers come close again as Charlie McCann and Knowles combined well with the latter’s ball across the face of goal cleared well by the away side.
The Terras began to grow into the game and fashioned their first chance of the afternoon when midfielder Christie Ward fired narrowly wide after good hold up play by forward Ezio Touray.
Rovers, however, would break the deadlock on the 40th minute when the lively McCann drove into the box and slid in the arriving Liam Sercombe who made no mistake.
The home side went close to doubling their lead soon after as Kyle McAllister found his way into the away side’s penalty area but could only fire straight at Will Buse in the Weymouth net.
The second period started much like the first with Rovers controlling possession and pinning the away side deep in their own half.
McAllister forced Buse into a smart save in the 73rd minute after the winger’s left-footed strike was pushed behind by Weymouth’s number one.
It would be in stoppage time when Rovers secured victory as McCann rolled substitute Christian Doidge in behind the Weymouth defence and the striker found the bottom corner with a composed finish.
Rovers will return to league action next Saturday as they host Braintree Town at The New Lawn.
